Laker fans, what is your opinion on the way Shane Battier contests Kobe's jump shots? Do you consider that a good defensive tactic, or do you think its dirty and should be disallowed?

In college, purposely obstructing an opponents vision by placing your hand near their face is a technical foul. In the NBA, the rule book says the following, "Eye guarding (placing a hand in front of the opponent’s eyes when guarding from the rear) a player who does not have possession of the ball is illegal and an unsportsmanlike technical shall be assessed." The rule book makes no mention about obstructing the vision of a player who's facing up with the ball.

I like it. No problem with it. It is apart of the game to me. Kobe needs to find a way to work around it. I don't think it is bothering him too much.

It's good D. Do you have a link to the college rulebook that says it's a T, I can't believe obstructing a line of sight on a shot is illegal.

There was fox sports community blog about it a year ago, by I guess some Laker fan. He quotes a number of different sources to show that its illegal in most basketball leagues outside the NBA:

I actually do that sometimes when I play basketball, but I do it just clowning around because if we play serious my guy will just slap my hand away. Personally I could care less, if it is legal I dunno why more people don't do it. Seems effective to me.

    I don't have a problem with it.

Sidenote: Shane has to be the best in the league at grabbing a player's jersey with his off hand. He's a very crafty defender.

Some people that I read about at LG were pissed about it due to possibly gouging someone's eye.

Don't know how often that occurs, but that is the only thing that bothers me.

If it happened often there would be a rule to make it illegal.
