Kay and Karl Malone announce plans for the Mailman's fan appreciation night Friday at the Delta Center.

    Douglas C. Pizac, Associated Press
Karl Malone isn't sure how many folks will show, but he is interested to find out.
"Whoever comes Friday will say a lot," said Malone, who after 18 years with the Jazz left last month to join the Los Angeles Lakers as an NBA free agent.
"Whoever don't come Friday," the league's No. 2 all-time scorer added, "will (also) say a lot."
Friday is when Malone has chosen to hold a free, open-to-the-public fan appreciation night at the Delta Center.
One day later, he leaves to join the USA Basketball senior men's team in preparation for an Olympic qualifying tournament that gets under way later this month in Puerto Rico.
Doors open at 5 p.m. Friday, and the event will run until about 7:30 p.m., or as long as fans continue to come in.
"It's going to go to whenever, basically," Malone said. "We're just going to wing it and have a good time."
Free hot dogs and soft drinks will be served, and Malone will mingle with, and speak to, fans.
Autographed memorabilia will be given away via drawings, and The Mailman will have on display items including his Olympic gold medals, jerseys from the 1992 and '96 Dream Teams and his two NBA MVP trophies.
Video highlights will play on the arena's scoreboard.
Malone also will have his monster, Power Forward, at the Delta Center for fans to see.
The short-notice event, being held in cooperation with the Jazz, was conceived by Malone, who at a news conference Tuesday said "I think the real Karl Malone fans will come out."
The goodwill gesture is a going-away party of sorts, though Malone did not rule out the possibility of rejoining the Jazz when his stint with the Lakers is done.
"I'm leaving here with a good taste in my mouth," said Malone, who has a one-year contract with an option for a second season in L.A. "And I don't see why that would change."

I saw him on the Best Damn Sports Show Period. He put on a great show. They talked about Rodman coming back and showed a video of him and Malone going at it. It was great. He took off his shirt to show his pecks. Boy is he ripped!

Malone isn't the best player that the franchise has seen hands down, but one could argue that he is. I say it's a three way tie between him, Maravich, and Stockton. They all excelled at their positions and you can't compare them. Stockton is the all-time leader in assists and steals. Malone may be the all-time leader in points and one of the top rebounders of all-time. And Maravich would have been at the top of many things if his life had not been tragically taken from him.

Good for Karl. I think it would be really great for him to win a ring in LA then join the Jazz to break the scoring record. I honestly would not see anything wrong with that. Either way his career is not going to be measured by championsips. We all know he tried really hard with the Jazz and Stock.
