The Hurricanes acquired star right winger Mikko Rantanen in a blockbuster three-way trade, sources confirmed. The Hurricanes acquired Rantanen and Chicago Blackhawks left winger Taylor Hall in the deal, sources said. Colorado got back winger Martin Necas, Carolina's leading scorer this season, and Hurricanes center Jack Drury, as well as a 2025 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-rounder from Carolina. Chicago acquired its own 2025 third-round pick that it had traded to Carolina previously, sources said. The Blackhawks are retaining half of Rantanen's $9.25 million salary cap hit to facilitate the trade.
The Canes are going to be a very tough out. Rantanen is a UFA after this season and wants a huge contract, so the Canes really are going all in right now. We'll see if it works out better for them this season. I am very interested to see what Drury does with the Rangers playing really well right now, and certainly within striking distance of a playoff spot. Logic would say deal guys like Lindgren and Smith as UFA's to be, but we'll see. I'd re-sign Borgen, but he could also have some value with how he's played, so who knows what Drury will do. They have a good deal of cap space, so buyer or seller I'd expect a decent amount of activity.
I don't think Drury would deal Borgen for anything less than a 1st, which they seem unlikely to be offered. I think he's more apt to sign him for 3-4y. As far as Raantanen, something feels like this won't work out that great for Carolina but I may be way off.
Carolina GM is starting to become a moron. Rantanen wants 14 million I heard. They have a lot of cap room next season so they can sign Rantanen. I guess Aho and Jarvis will be the top 2 centers. Not sure what the thinking is. Either way, Rantanen will not score at the same pace without McKinnon. Now the Av's will move Middlestadt. Maybe we can dump Zibanejad and Jones for Middlestadt and use Middlestadt to get Miller. Colorado is not finished.
Someone explain to me this trade from a Whalercane perspective. Necas was already a top scorer and only 26yo. Rantanen has about 10 more points but is a UFA coming up and 2yrs older. Is there an upgrade there? Not sure of Necas’ contract situation but Rantanen appears to be basically a rental.
Postseason Rantanen 101 points in 81 games (+20), Necas 30 points in 59 games (-3) and Rantanen is 20 pounds heavier. Regular season - no comparison Rantanen has scored over 100 more points than Necas last 2 years. I honestly don't know what the Avs were thinking with this trade. Hopefully this greases the skids for the Rangers to acquire JT. Loved Lav pointing to the addition of Borgen as one of the primary reasons for the turnaround, hopefully this will quiet Krappo's whining to the press and he can enjoy being 13 points out of the first WC spot in Seattle.
I think it was a slam-dunk trade for the Canes, who also added 3rd liner Hall (they didn't even have to include a 1st rounder). Rant is WAY better than Necas, who is a middle 6 player, and after a hot start has cooled greatly. While Rant may not be the same dominant stud without MacKinnon, he'll still be an impact top line player. With Orlov and Burns coming off their cap, I'd think the Canes would make every effort to re-sign Rant. I still think there's a strong chance the Rangers add Miller (especially with the Canes out on him), which would help this season and beyond as he's signed long-term. If the key piece is Chytil, I think it's a steal. The way I view Chytil is he's a huge risk. The guy has talent, but with his concussion issues, next game could be his last game. Simply put he is not reliable and cannot be counted on AT ALL. If we have to include a protected 1st and maybe a mid-prospect, I run to make that trade.
They know what you are too fucking lost to know. That Rantanen gets 50% of his points because of McKinnon who might actually be a better offensive player than McDavid now. That Rantanen is asking for 14 million a year which is fucking absurd. That Rantanen is a wing. Necas is a center. You need to be strong down the middle. That Middelstadt has been a disappointment. My guess is they will try to move him for a young wing to pair with McKinnon where he can flourish. Rantanen has good numbers when McKinnon isn't in the lineup but I don't put too much into that. When you play with a guy like McKinnon, when he doesn't miss too much time, your confidence will always be high. He's just going to keep your point total up. He's just that good. Do I think Rantanen will suck on Carolina? No. Do I think he could get 90 points there? Possibly. Do I think he makes them better than Necas? Absolutely not. A big part of Carolina's game is speed and carrying the puck. Necas is better at doing that than Rantanen is. To me it's a lateral move. I don't see the point but I'm sure Carolina has another move they are preparing to make. However, they emptied a lot of their system in the Guendickhead trade with Pitt.
The Rangers are a perfect example of how big, flashy moves don't win cups. Drury made two, what seemed to be meaningless trades this season in Borgen and Vaakanainen. Those two, boring, stay at home defenseman have potentially saved a total shit season. I wasn't high on Rempe. I thought the record with him last year was more of a fluke. However, this year you can clearly see the Rangers vets are gigantic pussies who play much better when Rempe dresses. Still not a great sign but it is what it is. Somehow, Carrick and Edstrom seem to be getting Rempe to actually play some meaningful hockey. All under the radar moves. I would not trade Lindgren and Chytil for Miller. That would ruin the chemistry of the team. They can't add Miller without getting rid of Zibanejad. He's the guy that has to go. If he's going to be a douchebag about it, then you have to scratch him until he accepts a trade. It will have to be a three way deal. Only play I can see wanting Zibanejad is Minnesota. They have one decent center. Amazing they are winning. It can't last. Rangers are going to have to eat at least 40% of Zibanejad's contract.
Necas is an absolute speed demon and excels at carrying and controlling the puck like you said, but he is not a C. He has lined up at RW way more often since his debut and certainly full time the past 3 or so seasons. Jarvis also does not play C. Rantanen is a hell of a player. Big and heavy, can really shoot it. But he does not address the Cane’s weakness, which for years now has been 2C behind Aho and in front of Staal. Kotkaniemi simply does not have it. It is a big reason Rod is constantly juggling the top 6 and rotating wingers around Aho. They have struggled to build two top 6 lines for a couple seasons. This trade might make them better but still doesn’t solve their main issue, and it certainly makes them slower. Necas and MacKinnon together are going to absolutely fly.
Necas should be in the middle. He may suck at faceoffs but his skating and puck skills are suited at center. Find a wing that can take faceoffs. Bedard is the worst in the dot. However, he's playing center. Carolina is probably going to try and acquire a center. They offered Kotkaniemi and Roslovic for Miller. Give me a fucking break. Kotkaniemi blows for his salary. I'd much rather have Zibanejad. He's shown when his head isn't up his ass he's a good, two way center.
Meeka won't accept a trade to Vancouver so best is to hope he can straighten things out here. The Rangers have $6 mil of cap space, Vancouver has $700k so I wouldn't expect them to be looking for much salary back, I think the Rangers made a fair offer with Lindgren and Chytil but I understand the Canucks rejecting it with Filip's injury history. I hope Drury can get it done, can't keep chasing windmills with trades for picks and prospects, this current team has come close and Miller would be a significant improvement over Chytil.
Like I said. Rantanen's numbers were greatly influenced by McKinnon. He has 1 G, 2 A in 8 games with the Canes. Necas has 12 points in 11 games for the Av's.
Not a good trade in retrospect for the Canes, as they are trying to win a SC but ended up worse off. They gave up Necas and Drury for Hall and Rantanen but in the trade to Dallas the player they got is nowhere near Necas/Rantanen level. They got 2 first rounders but those don’t help this season.
