Shane Carwin knocked out undefeated British heavyweight Neil Wain at UFC 89 on Saturday. He is a 33-year old fighter out of Denver, CO, with an unblemished 10-0 professional MMA record. He began his career in 2005 and has never fought a full round. On average, Carwin finishes his opponents in 67 seconds.

I browsed the online MMA stores and the largest size of MMA glove I could find was XL. According to last night's broadcast, Carwin couldn't fit into the special order gloves the UFC has for Brock Lesnar, 4XL, and required another size up--5XL.

Typical American glove sizes put medium at 8" around your four knuckles and palm at the base of your thumb. Carwin's hands have an approx. 16" circumference. Take a tape measure and make a 16" circle to get the jist of that. Add to that the fact he cuts weight to make the 265lbs heavyweight maximum weight limit and you have another freak of nature fighting in the division besides Brock Lesnar.

Carwin is a former NCAA D2 wrestling champion and a two-time All-American in football. He worked full time as an engineer at the time of his UFC debut but I'm under the impression he is devoted only to MMA now.

He has yet to fight a seasoned fighter like Cheick Kongo, Heath Herring or Antoni Hardonk, but the sky seems to be the limit for him. With guys like Lesnar and Velasquez also popping into the division it looks like the UFC is on the right track to having a new generation of scary heavyweight fighters.

I've seen pictures of Carwin and I really want to see him stand next to Lesnar. To me, Lesnar looks like he would be the bigger man but that 5xl thing makes me have doubts

    That is just scary. 5xl...

I don't know why Chuck would want to move up to Heavyweight...I don't know why all these small heavyweights would want to be heavyweights...Carwin and Brock are just scary.
