Does anyone know exactly what it is? Last I heard it was 32 inches and it's hard to believe that he's only jumping about an inch less than Carmelo Anthony, so I'm not entirely sure if that's true. But if it is... WOW.
32 is the last I heard too. He does jump well, but I don't know about now since he's older and heavier. It's probaly down to a 28.
Curious where you heard that. I find it hard to believe that because no.1 , hes very tall, and doesnt need a very high vert.and 2, he sure doesn't seem to jump very high. If you were that tall and had that high a vert, you would be getting way above the rim. Shaq doesn't seem to be getting a huge jump. I'd say he has .like a 20, but i could be way off.
I heard it was around 32 or higher, because they where comparing vert's, Spudds, VC's, Jordans, Niques, Shaq's and they said "what most people don't realize is that Shaq isn't only tall, hes got dominating power and the best vertical among starting centers.
20! Jeez, well he doesn't need to jump high obviously. But you don't remember that dunk he had over David Robinson in the 96 all-star game. He looked like he was about 32 inches up on that. His head was pretty close to the rim. About 3 inches away which is about 32 inches for someone 7'1.

I got the info from JumpUSA. Check this out: http://www.jumpusa.com/psj5.html And yes Carmelo isn't a great jumper, you can tell when you see him dunk. He jumps about the same as Chris Bosh I think.
What happened to Steve Francis? I seen that list before, and the last time I checked it was at 43. + his arms look so short, I can't believe his reach is 8'5. His reach looks like it's about 8 feet even. And I still think Spud Webb could a little higher then 46. I just guestimated about a 49 for him. Oh and Darrly Dawkins was surprising too. That man had mad hang time on his 360. I thought he would at least have a 40.
Only thing that shocked me on that list was spuds standing reach.. im the same height as spud and my arm only reaches 7'0... i thought vc had in the past a 44 inch vert, or higher even, i heard on the best damn sports show period
I read that VC had a 41 inch vert when I was reading an espn article on him during his 2nd year. It's just the way he dunks and elavates which makes him seem like he's getting higher then he really is. It's just that he has greater body control then ppl that jump higher then him. <div class="quote_poster">Quoting allstar44:</div><div class="quote_post">Only thing that shocked me on that list was spuds standing reach.. im the same height as spud and my arm only reaches 7'0...</div> 7'4 is pretty long for that height. But there is a member here and his s/n is still crossover I think and he's 5'7 with a 7'7 reach. 2 feet over his head on a short guys body. That's my length, but I'm 6'1 and that looks long on me.
Shaq probrably doesnt have much vert. Thats jumpin straight up right without bending the knees? I say a foot a half at most. 18 inches? Its not like he needs to jump high. the guy is a monster at 7'1
jumping straight up without bending the knees? no one measures that... wtf thats all calf muscle... pointless, because many things play a factor when jumping.. swinging your arms , bending knees, etc. shaq does have a pretty good vert for a man of his size and stuff... i remember an alley he caught from the right side of the net on an alley from about half court... he was UP THERE!!

James White is one huge exception, his vertical when measured is only 31 inches, but off one foot it's higher than a lot of other people, but he can't jump well straight up off two feet.

It's damn near impossible to not bend your knees at least a little when jumping.
they measure vert by jumping straight up. Of course you need to bend your knees for the intial jump. But you cant tuck your knees to your body and get more inches that way. Your legs have to be straight and they measure your vert from the bottom of your foot to the ground without your knees bent. Oh man, you guys take things posted so literally without even thinking for yourself what it could possibly mean. Needs to be in black and white to figure stuff out? LOL
