I'm not sure I can limit it to 5 "Do you believe in miracles" 1980 US Olympic Hockey team beats the Soviets & 1980 US Olympic Hockey team winning the Gold Medal by beating Finland Pittsburgh Pirates win the World Series in 1979 after being down 3 games to 1 3 Steelers Super Bowl wins that I watched (too young to recall the first two) Back to back Stanley Cups for the Penguins in 1991 and 1992 1984 Mens US Indoor Volleyball team winning Olympic gold 1998 Great Alaska Shootout #15 UC beats #1 Duke on a last second Home Run play (Fletcher to Martin to Levett) 1992 Elite Eight game between UC and then Memphis State. I was in Kemper Arena for it and UC advanced to the Final Four for the first time since 1963.
For me, the greatest Olympic moment was the sequence after Greg Louganis smacked his head on the diving board during a preliminary dive. For those that don't know what happened, the trainer sealed the wound with some glue so he could finish the prelims and qualify for the metal round. He then went to the hospital for stitches. The very next day he had to get up on the same board to make the very same dive--and he nailed it for the gold. In a very humanizing moment, they showed a close-up of Louganis' teddy bear, which he carried with him, which now sported a bandage on the back of his head in the same spot. What really sticks with me is an interview Louganis gave after he won. "How could you have the courage to go back up there and do the same dive the very next day?" he was asked. "Because if I didn't go back up there immediately," he replied, "I'd be afraid to dive the rest of my life." He should know--he had done it once before, years previously. That's what the Olympics is about, or should be about if it wasnt filled with so much commercialism. Whenever I'm nervous about doing something, I think of Louganis.
