My analysis of the three most likely teams:
Denver 37-45
Portland 36-46
Dallas 34-48
I used season-long home and away point differential averages. For example, look at Portland's next home game. Portland's home point differential has been 1.7 ppg. Washington's away point differential has...
Not MVP, but maybe "Most Valuable Glue Guy" for the Blazers. It looks like a good fit both offensively (Except the 3s, and he did shoot over .340 on corner 3s for the past two seasons) and defensively, where he stats out stronger than our current wings on the most frequent play types.
This is my third post on Evan Turner’s defense. It compares Turner to the Blazers wings from last year on a number of defensive categories, using percentiles. A percentile is what percent of NBA players you rank better than in a given stat. So a 90% percentile means that you are better than...
Last year, Golden State and Boston played 2 games. Basketball-Reference's Head2Head tool shows that Klay Thompson shot 15/39 on FG (38%) and 4/16 on 3P (25%) when matched up with Evan Turner. Small sample size, but still good news, and perhaps some insight into why NO brought Turner in
THANKS for looking into this. I agree that defensive stats are not so precise. And that George is taller, and gives him the versatility to defend bigger players. My main point is that the stats, no matter how imprecise, indicate that Turner is a very good defender, and better than any Blazer...
Dame shoots 20 times a game. If Turner can help him convert 10% (wild guess, but still less than Splashed Bros) of those opportunities to catch and shoots at a gain of 0.25 points per possession, he would score 0.5 points more per game.
CJ shoots 18 times a game. If Turner can help him convert...
Here are DRtg for the list, plus the Blazer wings from last year, plus Nic and Wes from their Blazer years: basketball-reference:
Turner 104
Bradley 106
Butler 106
George 101
Leonard 96
Aminu 107
Harkless 108
Crabbe 110
Batum 107 (Blazer career)
Matthews 110 (Blazer career)
Here, Turner...
AGREED that defensive stats can be misleading, and are in part system dependent. However, they are all we have right now. And all players are evaluated the same way.
You could also say that Crabbe's and Meyer's good 3 point shooting is inflated by having Dame and CJ as high level threats...
Evan Turner is a standout defender according to NBA.com’s Play Type defensive statistics. This summarizes defensive percentiles. A percentile is what percent of NBA players you rank better than in a given stat. So a 90% percentile means that you are better than 90% of NBA players.
I also...
