With an eclectic mix of folks who were around back when 10cc was putting out good music, I figured I'd ask if anyone has an opinion of them.

I've always been aware of them, but I only recently made an honest attempt to listen to their catalogue. I listened to their first four albums straight through, when they had their original line-up, and it was really interesting stuff.

After that fourth album, I just skimmed over the rest of their catalogue, because it really all sounded like shit to me.

They're weird and avant-garde, but for as much stupid shit that they wrote, there was actually some good music.

I was aware of the popular, stupid, fun tracks like "Rubber Bullets," "The Dean and I," and "Life is a Minestrone," and those are great, off-the-wall tracks that I can appreciate, but I didn't know that they also had some great straight-forward rock tracks like, "I'm Mandy, Fly Me."

They seem like a predecessor to bands that I never really fully got into, like the Talking Heads or the B-52's, but with actually decent rock tracks hidden in their early catalogue.

Thoughts?

First time I heard any of the members of 10cc was guitarist Eric Stewart when he was with the Mindbenders.

!0cc were all multi-instrument players with writing and producing skills. In the pop realm they were at the lead of the pack in pushing the envelope, but in such a deft way that their musically untrained audience rarely realized it.

I bought a flat guitar tutor.

The words ARE the chords to the song.
