They forgot the most important thing about the Big Dipper. The two outer stars of the cup
point to Polaris around which the whole northern sky pivots as the earth turns.

Polaris also known as the North Star is very important to a navigators and is rather dim compared to the bright stars. The Big Dipper is how to find it.
