well we are getting the 22nd in the upcoming NBA Draft. i ran across this mock draft that was done before the draft was conducted tonight. it was interesting who foxsports said would be drafted by NJ.

i know the draft is far away, but for them to have nelson fall that far is one thing, and for us to take him is another.

1- i dont think that nelson is going to fall all the way to 22. he is too good of a talent to fall that far. there are many teams infront of us that you can say could use nelson. basically every team infront of us besides cleveland,orlando(you gotta think they gettin emeka or they crazy),washington,new york,new orleans and miami could take jameer. so i think him at 22 wont happen and shouldnt.

2- i think if that were to happen, it would be a stab at zoran and we would have wasted a pick. i am a fan of jameer, but having him and zoran on the same roster isnt good. like stated before, we have enough wasted bodies on the bench we dont need more. i think nelson would have a brighter future but im basically saving that because i've seen nelson more than zoran because he obviously came from overseas and played little this season and in garbage time. nelson has a marbury type body and also has potential. one will have to go, but if we get nelson, then that means we wasted a pick on zoran and won't give him time to grow. unless if our front office and coaches see that this summer he still hasnt improved and are worried about a backup position, going for a rookie might not be the best idea. he would be able to help though b/c college pg's(and the other 4 positions) can adapt to the nba style quicker than european players. so there is definitly a positive to possibly drafting jameer, but there are negatives.

so, who do you think we should choose @ 22 and do you agree with that mock draft with nelson being a good draft for the nets?
 
^jameer probably will fall to the later part of the 1st round. He is way undersized even for a point guard, he is more of a scoring point guard then a true playmaking point guard. And teams dont really want to draft scoring pg's that small. Plus with the limited amount of Bigs in the NBA & in the draf,t teams are trying to secure as many talented bigmen as possible before they start focusing on PG's unless they are a cant miss type point guard prospect.

As for Zoran, he didnt handle the back up pg spot well at all, he clearly isnt ready. And its hard to believe that he will be ready to play 10-15 minutes(the kind of back pg minutes the Nets need someone to play to give kidd his proper rest so he wont wear down come playoff time) by the start of next season, so even if we dont draft a pg, we will still have to acquire one during the offseason . Plus realistically Zoran is a combo guard. And earlier in the season, when he was playing limited minutes alongside kidd was when he looked most comfortable, so we dont even know if he will end up being a pg at the NBA level.

My policy on drafting this year(since we have so many spot that may need to be filled) is that we draft the best player available, If Jameer Nelson is the best player left when we draft 22nd then take him

I dont want Robert Pack, He looked extremely old when he was with us earlier this season. And those 10 minutes per game, he was on the floor were very non productive minutes for the Nets. I wish we could bring back Anthony Johnson, he is a FA. And has clearly been the best backup we have had during the kidd era. But I doubt he will want to leave the Pacers since it seems like that almost let him split time with Tinsley at the PG. And we cant offer him those type of minutes.

Oh you are 100% right, they need to make sure that their is a legitimate backup on the roster by the start of training camp. Here are a list of Vetran PG's who will be free agents that I think can handle the back PG job way better than Robert Pack.

Brevin Knight- Runs a very effeicent offense for a PG with limited amount of turnovers. And he is pretty much to quick for teams to pressure. And you seen how much teams pressured us when J.Kidd wasnt in the game which caused alot of foolish turnovers & mess up the flow of the Nets offense. A guy like Knight pretty much takes that option away from the other team. Knight does lack size, so that may cost us a little against some of the bigger PG's in the east, who can score like Marbury.

Mike James- nice defender, can run an offense for limited amount of time, excellent creating off the dribble & has a solid perimeter shot. Their really isnt that much knock on him imo.

Chris Whitney- more of a spot up shot maker, then a playmaking PG. But he can bring bring a pretty solid perimeter shot to the back up PG, which would spread the floor while J.Kidd is on the bench. He does have a career avg of 3 ast PG, which is pretty solid for a guy who (with the exception of the 01-02 season when he started in the backcourt with MJ/RIp) has spent most of his career playing limited minutes as a backup. But like I said his perimeter shot is his best asset.

Charlie Ward- Dont be fooled by Ward's 2nd half of the season with the spurs, he is still a solid pg. He just went to a team where they need their PG's to be involved in the Pick & Roll and become playmakers, that isnt Wards' style of play. He is solid ball handler(limited amount of turnovers), doesnt really make players better but he runs a nice offense & know were to get the ball to the play makers so the can make plays (for the the Nets that would be RJ in a half-court set). And a solid perimeter shooter.

Then you have a bunch of guys out their that we have grew up watching like Rod Strickland, Kenny Anderson, Mark Jackson. They could all start the season & be very effective as our back up, but if Zoran doesnt workout, I fear one of these guys could wear down before the playoffs leaving us with an in experienced backup in Zoran or a 10 day contract back up PG for the playoffs(And as we are seeing with the Timberwolves an injury to a key starting point guard then really sifts the focus to your back up).

But anyway... I think all these PG would do a better job then Robert Pack did, so with type of crop of veteran piont guards out there, there is no reason why we should settle on bring Pack back to the team again.

out of all of those i think we would get ward. when he was deciding where to sign, NJ's name was thrown in because maybe he wanted to stay close to home. i believe he had a house in conn. but i dont know if he still has that house. i would think so because he knew he was probably only going to be in SA for half a season, maybe more i dont know SA's situation with if they liked him or not. like u said they want a guy who is better in the pick and roll so maybe they wont go after him. ward can bring the ball up and teams wont use that much pressure because they know he is a vet pg and can handle the ball with the best and is a smart player. if we get ward, i expect him to be on the team for the entire year and probably zoran be on the DL for all/most of the season. the other guys are also well qualified, but i think we have a better chance of landing ward b/c of the fact that he might want to play close to his home. plus we are a good team and we are legit contenders. so he would be coming to a championship-calibur team and close to home. that sounds like a pretty nice combo.
 
Woah. If Jameer would slip down to number 22 there's no way that the Nets should pass up on him. He'll provide stability when Kidd's on the bench. But I really don't think he'll slip that much. I'm thinking that he'll be picked at around 15.

I thought they were high on Snyder? He impressed the Nets during workout and we still need a SG if Kittles get traded. I don't think they'll be picking a C at the first round. They should pick a PG or an SG depending on the deals that Thorn can make before the draft.

Among the players posted by Henacy, I'm really high on Ward. The problem that we had when Kidd is on the bench is lack of stability. Ward can provide that stability and the half court offense.
 
A lot of international projects are considering to pull out of the Draft. If it happens, then Nelson would probably be chosen before we get the chance to select.
 
on DraftCity.com they have their mock draft. they projected the Nets to pick <u>Sebatian Telfair</u> at the #22 spot. what you guys think about this mock draft result? i dont know about this one. i dont think he will be much more of a help than zoran will be. im still for the best player out there at that time, but im still not sure what we are looking for. hopefully there will be a trade made before the draft so we can get a feel for what our need will be. depending on who we get depends on who we will go after on draft night. on other msg boards, i've heard people talk about us drafting Kevin Martin to possibly taking over the sg spot either this year or next year.

If the Nets are looking to draft Kevin Martin or Sebatian Telfair, then it seems that the Nets are looking to draft for the long term. When I always figured that the Nets would draft a safe pick, who has already proven himself against difficult competion & in difficult situations. Both of these cats are long term projects in my opinion.

Telfair would be more of a business pick imo. Rob Thorn drafting the local star to create some new interest in the tri-state area for the Nets especially since they are raising some Ticket prices. But the question is, Is he the instant answer to the Nets backup point guard problems? I mean is Telfair ready to play 15 minutes per game on the NBA level, running a team that will be trying to compete for a championship.

I mean if Kidd goes down again for a long stretch like he did this year, would Telfair be able to take over the team for that stretch. If the answer is no than that means we will have to long term projects at the Point guard spot in Telfair & Zoran. And still no answer for giving Kidd some legimate relief of him playing way to many minutes during the regular season. It seems to risky imo to draft another point guard who really hasnt proven himself under stressful competion.

I mean Iam not the biggest fan of drafting the other point guard these mock draft said we might select Jameer Nelson. But at least he is somewhat proven, due to his runs in the NCAA tournament. And his time playing in the Alantic 10. I still say we dont really focus on drafting a certain position. And focus more on drafting the best player available. And if that doesnt happen to be a point guard, so what. There will be a few veteran pg out there on the Free Agent market this year, that we can sign for the Veteran min.
 
from what people say telfair is like a marbury with a better shot. Pluss they cam from the same school. But i am also for the best player out there as long as it address the problems that we will be having in the short future but can still contribute to the team coming of f the bench or even starting when there is an injury like a kareem rush he came very late in the draft
 
I think that if he's there at the 22nd pick the Nets should take a look at Delonte West. He'd be a nice better to come of the bench to back-up Kittles, he also brings mad range to the team which I think you guys could use. Really the only big 3ball shooter on the squad is Harris.
 
I think the Nets should draft a PG because that Planinic guy cant play D, did you see when Jannero Pargo was on the Raptors and he broke his ankles... it was sick!!

If Jameer Nelson drops low enough for the Nets to grab I'd be all for it, he is a scoring point gaurd but if he play's with J-Kidd he will surely pick up something useful. Kidd is playmaking and Nelson scoring, solid 1-2 punch at the point gaurd position, even though undersized Nelson can ball IMO he, Devin Harris, Shaun Livingston and Sebastian Telfair have the most potential out of the point gaurds in this years draft.

Shaun Livingston is out of the question he is a lottery pick while the Nets have a late first round pick. Devin Harris is also up there with Livingston these guys made the most noise when they had a chance and it's paying off for them. Bassy and Nelson will be late first rounders any of them on the Nets would be fine, preferabbly Nelson he is more proven and the Net's need immediate help off the bench at the point gaurd position.
 
can i get a avatar PS3. But i do i agree that Jameer Nelson would be a great addition if there and for the second pick either a center or shoot guard I would take a shooting guard being that Nanad Kristic is coming to the team

If they had to choose between Telfair and Nelson, I hope the Nets choose Telfair.. In three years, Kidd definitely will not be able to play 35+ minutes a game and under the tutelage of Kidd, Telfair will shine in the league and will be ready to take Kidd's starting position. In three years, Kidd and Telfair might even able to start together as Kidd is big enough to gaurd most shooting gaurds in the league. It won't solve the need for a back up point gaurd for this year, but Kenny Anderson said he would like to return to the Nets and I think he'll be the short-term answer.

If the Nets don't have Telfair or Nelson to draft, I hope they take Luke Jackson (if he's that low). He's a great shooter/offensive player and could be what Micheal Redd was for the Bucks last season. If they're intent on building for the future, I suggest they consider New Jersey Native, JR Smith as well and possibly Kevin Martin.

When I had first seen the list of players expected to go late 1st round last month, I was thinking Luke Jackson could help our 2 guard problemsbecause he is a shooter & a playmaker, and thats a combination that the Nets need on that off guard position. He has the ablity to create shots for others, And we dont have enuff players who can create shots for teammates

I dont think he will ever be the scorer that Micheal Redd is, everybody think Redd came out of nowhere & just became this excellent scorer on the NBA level. But he was always a great scorer at Ohio State, his jumpshot just got better. So Luke Jackson hasnt shown that he will be a Micheal Redd type scorer. But I do think he will bring alot to the table, he is going to be a difficult match will his range & his ablity to put the ball on the floor & create when he has too.

The only thing that scares me about Jackson is he cant really guard anybody.
 
yea i've seen l.jackson's name on other msg boards. he obviously wont get enough minutes to do what redd is and wont get enough to really grow right away. maybe in a few years if he becomes really good he can move into our starting lineup. as of now he does has nice range which we really dont have. we take a lot of jumpers but our guys are not great jump shot shooters which is really annoying. hopefully he would be able to practice like rj does and his jumper and range will improve a la rj's has. if we draft him, i hope he doesnt end up like slay and armstrong just sitting on the bench for 3yrs and taking up space. we need to draft someone that we know can help us and someone that we will use and not just keep for 3yrs and let another team take the benefits of that player growing under our system

^ Maybe its robert Swift, from what they say he has godd footwork & offensive skills in the low -block, he 7-0 but he seems kind of thin wieghting less than 250. So he will probably back up Jason Collins this season while he works on bulking up. And then he might be in position to become take over the starting center job at the start of the 2005-2006 season when we may lose JC to free Agency.

Also Rob Thorn probably thinks that by adding Robert Swift, we can put Aaron Williams on the trade block to go in a package deal to get us a legitimate upgrade at the 2-guard spot.
 
i could just throw some names out there but it wouldnt be based on anything. im still not sure what we are doing/going to do via trade and in the FA market. if we get sar, then i would think we would get a perimeter player via draft or fa/trade, if we get ray then i would say a big man via draft or fa/trade. we need big men reguardless, but i hope they have made this promise looking ahead to what we are going to get and will need.
 
Robert Swift sounds good. He can defend and score. SHould I add score with a high percentage. I mean, a little over 71% on the field?! He's young but he's not like those young European projects. He can also pass from the post. He's perfect for the offense that we're running. If they're going to get a big man, he is a better option than Peja Samardziski that nbadraft.net is projecting the Nets to pick.

If they indeed promise their pic to a big man, I guess they're picking up a vet. PG huh? Looks like they have something up their sleeves. They'll pick up a 7 footer who can defend, pick up a veteran PG that can run the show when Kidd is on the bench and trade for a legitimate 2 guard. That should solve the problems.
 
I don't know about Robert Swift. I saw him the McDonald's all american and was impressed..but can he contribute next year? Or will he end up taking a Darko roll? How long will it take him to be a solid contributer? If it took three years, would he stay with the Nets after his contract? Too many unknowns for me to buy into so far.. By the time his rookie contract ends, so will Shaq's likely extension and will he go back to LA?

If they draft him, sure, but he better stay with the Nets longer than his rookie contract.

I'm guessing with Kenny's expressed interest in becoming a back-up for Kidd, they're hoping he can deliver.

I hope they do trade Kittles for a good to great player like Shareef or Ray Allen, but after the following season, I hope Kerry comes back for a cheaper contract and a 6th man roll. By that time, Rodney Rogers and Lucious Harris' contracts will be up and Kerry can be the main guy off the bench.
 
From what I know with Swift, he's an excellent passer from the post. Something that Twin can be proud of. The problem with Swift is his tendency to go after all the shots to block them. Now this can be a good thing but you'll be leaving some chances for the offensive team to get an offensive board. If he can box out like Twin can and still get at least half of the rebounds that he's getting in high school, he'll be an upgrade from Twin.
 
Well from what Iam hearing the Nets will use their 2nd round pick to draft a point guard, some of the names being mentioned are Luis Flores from Manhattan & Chris Duhon from Duke.

Luis Flores came to work out with the Nets already. Me personally I liked Flores in college. But the thing that scares me is he is one those players that is trying to become a point guard really for the 1st time at the NBA level. When Flores was with the Jaspers he was an undersized scoring guard more less now he is trying to switch over & become an everyday point guard. Dwayne Wade made the switch from playing 2-guard in college to playing pg at the next level. But for the most part players trying to make that change over rarely works on the NBA level.

Chris Duhon really excites me if he is available to us when we select in the 2nd round. He is a floor leader, he might not bew able to score like some of the 1st round pg's they had us selecting in the draft like Nelson. But he can lead a team & make point guard plays & thats one of the things I like about him. He is the only PG that they have rumor we would select in the draft, that I would feel comfortable handing the team over to if Kidd minutes were limited at the start of the season.

And as we seen in the NCAA tourment the kid got heart & character, as shown the way he fought thru the injury he suffered in the ACC tournament vs Maryland. He showed alot of character playing in the NCAA tournament after that, & insprining Duke to go on a decent run. And me personally I like to inject a players heart when I am thinking about overall players skills. And thats saying alot about Duhon coming from a program in Duke where their players are often assosicated with softness. Duhon seems to have a little tuffness & character about him. And I like it.
 
Duhon would be a great 2nd round pick. He's perfect for our defensive sets. He's a great perimeter defender. He's solid when running the point. He may not be flashy but he can get the job done. But I don't think he'll be available when we select in the 2nd round. Word has it that the Magic will select him with their 2nd pick. Besides, his stocks are rising. He may even be selected late in the 1st round.

first two things i liked even before reading his strengths/weaknessess was that he is a SG and a senior. osu had a nice run and i would mind picking him. first there are reports we are drafting a big man, then a bunch of sg's are listed on mock sites that we would take. i know they are mocks and are not really based on any facts, but these picks sound nice to have.
 
Tony Allen definately proved what he was about at OSU last year in the backcourt john Lucus Jr. The only thing I worry about is how he will matchup against some of the bigger wing players in the east but maybe Rj defense can cover up against the better wing players. I think that since his game is so polished & he is so proven we could start him if we lost Kittles via trade. But we have to keep Lucious Harris(who is also onthe tade block according to rumors), to have that veteran guard who knows the system to pick up for when Allen goes thru those rookie periods where he may struggle with consistency.

But overall I think he is a draft sleeper. He is extremely athletic(so he will def fit in to our open court style) and he has a proven jumpshot in the half court but it seems to lack range. So we would be losing effiency from the 3pt area with Allen taking over for kittles. But he would be an up grade a far as creating his own shot off the dribble.

I think Tony Allen would be a extremely solid pick at #22. And a much safer choice than guys like Wright, Kevin Martin, Telfair, & a few unproven guards they had the Nets taking with the #22 pick. But it still wouldnt shock me if we took a big body with that early pick. And way to take a shooting guard or a point guard with our 2nd round pic since there seems to be alot of solid guards that are projected to be avaible in the 2nd round.
 
But you must admit that these things excite all the Nets fans:

Just think how that would help our fastbreak greatly. He's also a very physical defender. That would help. If he can prove that he can make the transition to PG, then he'll be a great addition. But I agree with Henacy that as of this moment, he's not worth the #22 pick. But we're running out of options. Swift and Nelson's stocks are rising. WE're better off with a big man with the 22 pick IMHO.
 
Tony Allen is a great defender, he can block a lot of perimeter shots and he's very athletic and has great sense in when go go for a block or steal.

He has pretty nice handles though he loses the ball too much trying ot make a crossover or a quick move.

He can get his shot off and create which helps, but he lacks range. He was a decent 3-pt shooter in college, I don't know if he can hit the NBA 3.

I guess he's a good pick, I saw him jump up in a lot of mock drafts.
