NEW: I’m proposing the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution to help end our nation’s gun violence crisis.

The American people are sick of Congress’ inaction.

The 28th will enshrine 4 widely supported gun safety freedoms -- while leaving the 2nd Amendment intact:

1) Raising the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21

2) Universal background checks

3) A reasonable waiting period for gun purchases

4) Banning the civilian purchase of assault weapons

What exactly is an assault weapon.

assault rifle, military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and that has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire.

Nearly all assault rifle sales in the US are completed only after background checks have been completed and very expensive permits have been attained.

*Edit* Assault rifles are not being used in mass killings either. Or virtually any killings in the US, for that matter...

A constitutional amendment requires 3/4 of US States to support it.

3/4 of US States currently support permitless open carry.

This isnt being sarcastic, im genuinely curious, the link you presented said an AR-15 is an assault rifle. And those have been linked to several mass shootings in just the last 12 months. So Im confused by your edit. Just asking for clarification.

Whether they are used or not, what’s the justification for having an assault rifle such as an AR-15?

Seen this same movie several times before...someone who has already developed opinion on a particular topic, scours the net for any links that appear to support their position.

I think it's safe to say that research should be done before formulating an opinion on topics.

1. To say or imply assault weapons haven't been used in mass shooting is simply not true.

2. Using "violent crime rates" as a barometer for mass shootings is skewing the issue because all mass shootings are violent crimes but all violent crimes are not mass shootings.

I would not be surprised if another barrage of retroactive ill-advised links is on the way or the " I never said..." or "that's not what I meant" defense.

An AR-15 is not an assault rifle. It is a semi automatic sporting rifle between a .22 rodent rifle and a 30-06 Deer Rifle.

All of which are typically sold as semi automatic. With similar magazines for the purposes of target shooting and hunting. For example, it doesn't make sense to hunt small game with a 30-06 (it's sometimes even illegal) just as it doesn't make sense to hunt deer and elk with a .22 (and is sometimes illegal). On the other hand, you can generally hunt both deer and smaller game with mid sized calibers like .243 and 5.56/.223 (AR)

Also, the AR platform is fantastic for hunting wild hogs when chambered in a larger caliber.

Can you please explain to me what is different about an AR-15 (5.56/.223) that would make somebody consider it more dangerous than a 30-06, 30-30, .270, or .243? The rifles themselves all have exactly the same functionality. All available in semiautomatic. A single trigger pull fires a single round.

You mean supporting a position with evidence? I didn't realize that was frowned upon...

I've done a ton of research. That's how I form my opinions. I don't have strong opinions about things I've not researched.

1. To say or imply assault weapons haven't been used in mass shooting is simply not true.
Link please? Please show me a link to a mass shooting using an unmodified and legally purchased gun with semi automatic and fully automatic capability. (It's already illegal to modify guns to be fully automatic, so that's a different discussion)

I'll wait.

2. Using "violent crime rates" as a barometer for mass shootings is skewing the issue because all mass shootings are violent crimes but all violent crimes are not mass shootings.

Violent crime rates wasn't used a barometer for gun deaths. The point is that the tool isn't the problem. People hurt each other when they want to. Removing a tool doesn't make a place safer or less violent.

I would not be surprised if another barrage of retroactive ill-advised links is on the way or the " I never said..." or "that's not what I meant" defense.

Can you explain the physical difference between a legaly purchased (which means semiautomatic) AR-15 and a legally purchased Remington hunting rifle? What makes them different?

Not as legally available in the US. You can't sell or buy an automatic AR-15 (or any gun) in the US without an expensive permit and extensive background check from the ATF. Very few people do this besides extreme collectors. It has been illegal to buy or sell fully automatic guns for nearly a century.

The AR-15 you can buy is semi-automatic and not capable of fully automatic fire (this means it is not an assault rifle).

To be clear. The AR15 people can buy have exactly the same functionality as any other type of hunting rifle you can buy in any caliber or brand.

Nope. It's a soundbite that dupes people into thinking it will make a difference.
nope. It’s a proposed amendment that is WIDELY popular.

The NRA and paranoid gun nuts have duped people into thinking it won’t make any difference

Just an update.... had an amazing evening last night at my daughter's graduation at Providence Park....just wanted to let you all know nobody was gun down and murdered.

It won't happen. You'd have to get 3/4 of states to vote for it.

This is just a distraction from real solutions that could actually be achieved, and would drastically improve the lives of all lower and middle class Americans.

This is Democrats supporting people who are opposed to their own best interests. Same as Republicans who oppose a strong social safety net. This is a tool to maintain the status quo.

Once again, kids in the US are 20x more likely to be killed by a parent than by a gun at school.

We have far bigger problems than this baloney the media and fake liberals are pushing.

It's their fault you were ever concerned about it at all.

That said, I'm glad you had a great time!

So once again. Are we planning on outlawing the purchase of semiautomatic hunting rifles? That is not popular. And has no chance to pass nationally.

And if not, how are we going to define an AR 15 in any way that will be enforceable but not ban semiautomatic hunting rifles?

Seriously. Until you figure that out this is a non starter, which makes it click bait.

I'm all for it! One gun death is one too many. Sure lots of things kill people like cancer and old age but guns you CAN control with proper legislation. I don't care to debate it...unless we start the transition from a gun culture we'll never know what it's like not to live in a gun culture here. I know what its like to live in a country where you can't buy a gun and it was really safe and a better social system than we have now. To be unwilling to see the potential of that is a choice, not a statistic or reality. People used to say that the women's vote would never pass into law but it did.

Bump stocks and other devices can enable ARs to reportedly fire up to 900 rounds per minute.

And ARs can be chambered in several calibers larger than a .223 and the type of load/partition is what truly determines the degree of damage done by even smaller caliber rounds.

Edit; legislation making bump stocks and other devices illegal will not prevent someone who really wants them from acquiring them, even illegally.

Agreed...the "right to bear arms" was built into out bill of rights over 200 years ago which was obviously way before ARs/assault rifles came to be and the have no practical purpose in the present and are only good for 2 things, killing people and mindlessly/foolishly/needlessly wasting 100s of dollars of ammo in a few seconds at the shooting range just to make some guy feel more macho so that he can then go home and masturbate to Rambo movies.

Bump stock and other devices can enable any gun to fire up to 900 rounds per minute, and even more. They are typically made for the AR because the AR is the most popular rifle in the US.

And ARs can be chambered in several calibers larger than a .223 and the type of load/partition is what truly determines the degree of damage done by even smaller caliber rounds.
Any gun can be chambered in larger calibers and any modern gun can fire the same type of load/partition as the AR. There is nothing unique about the AR here. Just that it is the most popular rifle in the US.

Nothing you wrote here is unique to the AR platform.

Preventing women from voting was oppressive of the weak. Further restricting gun rights is oppressive of the weak. You've been fooled.
