Hats off to these boyhood Epic Legends, for those who were old enough to remember these guys, and that incredible buzz filled year. I like many thought The Mick would be the 1st to break Ruth's Record, and He would have had it not of been for His hospitalization for His bum Knee......- Hats off, and Cheers to 1961 - For those still a twinkle in their Daddy's eye, it didn't get better,

Great shots Rob. Question, Going through that book (I'm about half way through it) I noticed that right up to the early 50s there were only 2 Monuments in CF (Huggins & Gehrig) when did they add Ruth's monument?

I thought you guys would enjoy this. If you click on the Pg. 8 Pic; you will notice 3 monuments, one is Ruths. These monuments vs plaques is quit an interesting story in themselves. Like DiMaggio got his after The Mick. (see *** below).

In 1929, Yankees manager Miller Huggins died suddenly, and in his honor the team erected a free-standing monument in front of the flag pole consisting of a bronze plaque mounted on an upright block of red granite resembling a headstone. This, in turn, led many Yankee fans over the years, particularly children, to believe that the players honored were also buried there upon their death.

The Huggins monument was later joined by similar memorials to Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth erected upon their deaths. Over time a number of plaques were mounted behind them on the outfield wall. Placing monuments in the field of play was not so unusual at the time, as there had been in-play stones and plaques at the Polo Grounds and Forbes Field.

***In 1969, Mickey Mantle was given a plaque by Joe DiMaggio to hang on the center field wall, who in turn gave Joe DiMaggio a plaque of his own which, in Mickey's words, had to be hung a little bit higher than his.

***With the formalization of the area as an official Monument Park, the Mantle and DiMaggio plaques were removed from the wall upon their deaths and mounted on red granite blocks matching the original three of Huggins, Gehrig, and Ruth.

LMAO, Yep, I always consider the source before regarding the legitimacy of any claim. In these cases, the claims were made by our 1 of 2, illegitimate children, slysdexical......(the other is our fair weathered in season only fan); or- 'the self proclaimed Minor Lg'r'.

Ruth died in 48 And he still didn't have a monument in the early 50s so apparently they waited some time.

...Rick, as far as I know, the date on which each of the monuments were dedicated is engraved on the bottom of the monument.

...Ruth died August 16, 1948 and was honored April 19th the following year on opening day.

I see what your saying, When I hold a magnifying glass to the pic on page 240, I can clearly see concrete bases for 3 monuments, but only see indeed 2 monuments. This is a very odd pic on pg. 240, as I see what looks like a shadow of Ruth's Monument, when looking off the wall, it looks like a negative or photo shadow, perhaps an error, or perhaps Ruth's monument was removed for cleaning, something? Not sure why. But yep, Ruth's monument was added in 49, as per the Wiki link in post #10..........? Ya' got me over the barrel, in a way.....

I saw that also Rob, it does look like a 3rd base for a monument but clearly there are only 2. And that photo is from 1952. What a dilemma. Where's Columbo when you need him?

...a somewhat obscure fact about that '61 season is that while Maris broke the record by hitting 61 HRs, the Yankee catchers combined to hit 64 HRs.

It is an abomination ie Obumanation, fk up if there ever was one. Things were just fine here with our Medical Care, until this fiasco......It took us 13 months initially 2 years ago, to get Kim's medical squared away, then mine was asking for a $1,200 a month share of cost, say WTF, so I wind up on a fkng HMO, or "Medicare Advantage Plan",

BTW- HUMANA is the worst medical insurance known to man, I had that 1 year, and dropped it as fast as I could. Seriously, Humana is a fraud if there ever was one, for insurance companies.
