A tsunami alert has been issued after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

The quake's epicentre was 204 km (127 miles) northwest of Sumatra's coast, at a depth of nearly 48km, the US Geological Survey said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active areas for earthquakes and volcanoes.

It has recently been struck by string of quakes; one off Sumatra in September killed more than 1,000 people.

Northern Sumatra, Indonesia was struck by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake at 05:15:02 AM local time. A tsunami warning was originally issued but has since been canceled. According to CNN, "The tsunamis, in Banyak Island and Teluk Dalam, were small and not dangerous, measuring just under a foot high." Scientists were not expecting a widespread destructive tsunami like the one that happened in 2004 and killed more than 200,000 in 14 countries.
