When I got out of the Army I grew a long and very unkempt beard. From that time on, women and children would cross the street to avoid walking by me. I was on the raod a couple times and in an emergency needed to use the phone. Twice the homeowner handed me the phone through a barely opened and chain locked front door so I could make my call. They must have thought I was Jack the Ripper incarnate.
