If I am fortunate enough to get this job that I'm interviewing for, I'm thinking of cheap alternatives for commuting. It's close to where I live, but far enough that I don't want to ride a bicycle.

I was thinking about getting a bike for commuting... maybe a Honda or a Kawasaki. Nothing big, just a 250 cc, which would give me enough power to go where I need. I'm not looking to joy ride, I'm not looking to kill myself. I just want something that gets good gas mileage and is inexpensive.

The Honda CBR 250R is around 4k new and it gets 80 or 90 MPG.

Does anyone have a bike? Any experience with commuting? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Go for broke and get one of these bad boys:

You'll shoot your eye out.

good news is that motorcycle riders dont usually go to the ER after crashes

bad news is they usually go straight to the morgue

Get a Vespa. It fits your personality.

ive motorbiked a bit, biggest thing is, it REALLY sucks riding in the heavy rain, and you have to really drive defensively to make sure some idiot isnt going to cut you off and kill you

yeah, who gives a fuck about those bike riding fucks in sturgis, you'd probably score some nice hipster chicks in portland which is better.

My brother has an Iron 883 like this one:

Pretty sick in person.

In 1970 I was flying around Los Angeles on my Suzuki 125. With my long hair flying, swooning girls would poke their heads out of car windows and drive alongside me. An owl once thought he owned his hill and attacked me for loud dirt biking.

One caveat: After stopping at a stop sign with a puddle, then you turn left or right onto a street while accelerating--your tires don't hold the road and you flop onto your side. Your bleeding ankle takes the falling weight of the bike against the pavement. You are in the middle of a Los Angeles multi-lane main drag, looking from an altitude of 6 inches at oncoming cars, trying to extricate yourself from a motorcycle on top of your leg. You hurriedly lift it off, get up, and wheel it to the side before you get run over.

I was smart, so it only took me 3 or 4 bleeding ankle falls in a month before I learned to drive around puddles. I'm a fast learner.
