Yankees rookie reliever Ron Marinaccio is among a contingent of injured players heading to work out at the team's player development complex in Tampa.
Reliever Ron Marinaccio, starting pitcher Frankie Montas and left fielder Andrew Benintendi are heading to the team’s player development complex in Tampa work out in the possibility all three could be activated for next round of the playoffs.
First, the Yankees need to beat the Guardians, whom they were slated to face in Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Friday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
Marinaccio, dealing with a stress reaction in his left shin, was expected to face hitters in a live batting practice session, according to manager Aaron Boone.
Benintendi, recovering from a broken right hand, will try to rack up at-bats.
“He’s doing well,” Boone said.
Benintendi hit off a high velocity pitching machine at Yankees Stadium on Thursday with the game rained out. Boone said it wasn’t a lock that Benintendi would start over Oswaldo Cabrera if Beintendi returns for the AL Championship Series.
“We’ll see,” Boone said. “I don’t know where he’s at. How built up, how strong, if he’d be able to handle a full game (right away).”
Montas threw a bullpen session Wednesday and Boone said the right-hander could be able to give the Yankees a few innings if they make it to the next round.
"We’ll see how the next few days goes,” Boone said.
The Yankees provided more clarity on DJ LeMahieu’s toe injury.
A spokesman said LeMahieu is dealing with an injury to a ligament on the underside of his second right toe. The bone isn’t broken despite reports saying otherwise, the spokesman said. The injury may have been caused by LeMahieu compensating for a pre-existing injury to his right big toe, the spokesman added.
LeMahieu was expected to continue performing baseball activities with the Yankees. He’ll head to Cleveland with the team for Game 3 on Saturday.
