Alex Chilton's most well-known song was probably "The Letter" by the 1960s band, The Boxtops, from when he was very young. But he went on to form Big Star in the 1970s, which pretty much started the genre of "power pop" and is considered one of the most influential bands, despite not having ever been widely popular.
I recommend that anyone unfamiliar with Big Star and likes guitar-driven pop check out the albums #1 Record and Radio City.
