I wonder what the Niners could get for him this offseason. It's obvious that he won't be back next year. He's a good QB. Just curious what some people think he could bring back.

Works to the Niners advantage that this year's draft appears to be weak on QB's.

My question is who would he start for? I cant see many teams he could start for. Smith is only a good game Manager.

I would say az, but kolb actually looked good at the start of the year.

He definitely could start for kansas city, but id expect them to draft a qb.

Vick will be a free agent too (most likely) and id expect him to start somewhere

Yeah, I think most teams will be looking to next draft with Manziel possibly coming out, maybe Mariota, etc.

If I had a high pick, Matt Barkley wouldn't excite me.

They could send him to Minnesota for a couple picks. Vikes could use a real quarterback to pair with Peterson. I have absolutely zero faith in Christian Ponder.

Smith is a system QB who lacks mobility. On most other teams he'll not start. I think a third round pick seems appropriate.

He's had a couple of good years though. I could see him going to a team like Baltimore if Flacko demands too much money.

Id say the jets but i dont think Smith could handle the ny media.

Jacksonville?

Very good point. I hear Flaco and Baltimore are wondering if they are a good fit.

I don't think the Niners are going to ask for the moon. They know they're not in a position of power because everyone knows Smith will have to be traded. I figure they'll just want a pick or two.

I can't see it being two picks unless they are both 5th round or later.

I don't think he's a good quarterback at all.

Harbaugh was able to cover up for him, but Smith just isn't accurate, can't throw on the run, and doesn't appear to be mentally tough. He'll probably get a shot somewhere, but I don't think it will be as a starter.

I think Jacksonville and Kansas City are both good fits but I don't think he gets traded becuase there is no reason for anyone to give anything up for him. He has a pretty huge roster bonus coming up and the niners will cut him first. I think every team knows that. As much as I would love for the niners to keep him as a backup (I still don't have complete faith in Kap, Smith is the best backup in the league IMO, and they would only be spending 9M total on the QB), there is no way they do it.

I'm not a Smith apologist. I'm glad he's benched and I'm glad he'll be gone.... but I don't think he's necessarily a bad QB. I just don't think he's good enough to win a Super Bowl.

Not mentally tough? The guy has has a different coach and OC every year until Harbaugh got here. He Had Nolan saying to the media that he sucked, Singletary didn't even pay him that much attention, the fans wanted him run out of town. Not only did he not ask out or even leave when his contract was up, like most everyone else would have done, he took less money to stay becuase he wanted to show the people here that he wasn't as bad as he had shown.

I'm in total agreement that he's not the most talented guy but, IMO, he's as mentally tough as it gets.

What do you think WF? What can the Niners get for him?

Agree to disagree. :)

I laugh when people saying this. Because it's clear they haven't watched him play. He's not mobile like Kaep, Russell Wilson, Vick, RG3, etc. But he's more mobile than people give him credit. I'd say he has average mobility.

I'm not a huge Smith fan, but why do people say he's not mentally tough? He's been getting bagged on for years, and he's taken all of it. He's stuck around and continued to listen to the large contingent of haters. He continues to just shrug off the negative things people say about him and he keeps to himself and does his thing.

He's about average mobility-wise, but his problem is that he is absolutely terrible at throwing on the run. If he's forced to move out of the pocket, he'll miss his receiver by 10 yards.

Do you guys get most of the 49er games on TV up there?

This season, yes..... which pisses me off because I spent the $250 on League Pass and almost none of the games have actually been on League Pass. In fact, the last few were blacked out.... which really annoys me. WTF did I pay for exactly?

Yes. We used to get every single game until the Niners started sucking (the Niners have a huge following up here, but once they started sucking, more Seahawks games found their way onto TV). But I always have the NFL package, too.

Not exactly sure how watching every game will show me how "mentally weak" he is, though? :dunno:

It's not necessarily what I see during the games that show me whether or not he's mentally tough. I mean, that's part of it. But the way he carries himself on and off the field, the way he talks to the media, etc. The guy takes the abuse and just keeps on doing his thing.

Like I said, agree to disagree. It's not like it's a quantifiable thing. My opinion is that he is mentally weak and wilts under the big pressure. He doesn't make good decisions.

Plus, he's just not that talented.

The Niners sucking had nothing to do with it. The Seagulls moved to the NFC, which was primarily broadcast on Fox. Seagulls games used to be on CBS (which did AFC games). As soon as they went to the NFC, they bumped the Niners because obviously Portlanders want to watch our beloved neighbors to the north.

No one wants him at that contract. He'll be cut because it's stupid of the Niners to pay so much for a backup and he'll get a chance elsewhere.

Yes, like he did last year?? I mean, I'd get your opinion if I hadn't seen Smith blossom into what he's become. But I expected him to wilt against the Saints, but he stepped up like a champ. He had a decent game against the Giants, and that was not his fault they lost.

Actually, the losing was part of it. The Niners were still on quite a bit after the Seahawks came to the NFC. The Seahawks moving to the NFC was part of it (and the start). But once the Niners started sucking, ratings tanked and people were crying for the Seahawks, the "hometown" team. This is at least according to a family friend who would have some knowledge of the situation.
