I'm not going to berate our kids for the loss rather the incompetent DC who doesn't make adjustments and lets a one dimensional team with less talent than Stanford run the ball north and south down our throats the exact same way the happy trees did with more success!!

Aliotti's defense scheme's have put our front line kids at a terrible disadvantage for many years. The difference before is we had damn good LB's like Clay and Kiko who could hit those gaps with force and make RB's not want those holes again. We don't have that this year and no Dion on the outside to get after the QB and often. By the time our defense can react the RB or QB is in our LB zones gaining positive yards. If you saw that during Stanford you adjust at halftime if you're the DC, Aliotti did nothing. Then AZ comes out and does the exact same thing with a better running back and a less talented line and Aliotti changes nothing again. Unbelievable and AZ just chewed the damn clock apart!!!

It's hard to think we have to go bigger than Buckner and Armstead and I don't think that's realistic. Further both of these kids can play. They are just being asked to take on to much from the other line and they can't be effective. That's Aliotti and that's why he needs to step down. His day and philosophies just don't work at the level we need to win a national championship, beat Stanford, or even AZ for that matter.

Being around 20 years and losing the big game every time should indicate he can't get us there rather than he's just been really unlucky 20+ times, don't ya think?

For the rational among us, guess which Pac 12 team ranks 3rd in the conference in points allowed and total yards surrendered despite being on the field for far more snaps then any other? This same team's D leads the Pac 12 with a paltry 4.53 yards surrendered per play... thats good enough to be 10th in all of college football.

This is a fact Stomp, not an opinion! The teams you are quoting we beat we were never playing behind from at any point. Please factor that into your padded stat!

10th place D Stomp translates into the Holiday Bowl playing against Texas Tech, because you couldn't stop 10 better offenses. This defense needs to change and every Oregon alumni I've spoken to says the same thing. The country says the same thing unless you've missed any sports show for the last 3 weeks. Our bend don't break isn't cutting it anymore. But hey, the dinosaurs didn't see a problem either as they went STOMP in the night. Right?

You're not disagreeing with me, rather every football expert in this country who's paid to make an assessment on our play. They all concur our defensive scheme is soft. I've not railed our kids, in fact I've defended them! I've said over and over again, we can't get bigger on our D line, rather our D line needs to be adjusted. When Stanford is playing with an 8 man box, putting 3 guys to go against their 8 is plain silly. As silly as you are to say Aliotti's defense works 90% of the time without reference! When playing from behind, LSU, Stanford, Auburn, USC, Arizona, teams with real offensive lines and big backs, it's failed, miserably!! Of course when we're up on a team 21 and they have to make plays out of their comfort zone then our defense thrives. That's what you're hanging your argument on! The problem Stomp is those team with big lines and physical backs are the same teams we'll see going for a national championship. Now if you're fulfilled with the Holiday Bowl then this discussion makes no sense and why continue?

As for your routine assessments of others, "Incoherent ramblings, flustered and confused" why don't you just keep it to football for once and try being classy?! Defend your X's O's for once, instead of taking jabs to divert away from your lack of football knowledge.

Aliotti has had 25+ years to make a national championship caliber defense, Oregon is now past his skill set for the kind of ultimate goal we are looking to achieve. Sorry if that offends you. A defense titled "bend don't break" should give you a strong indication of why we Ducks might choose a different defensive path! Ya think?

for what? Consistently fielding one of the top D's in the Pac 12? The millions of dollars he's paid annually is a reflection of how he's held accountable. Aliotti has been sited as one of the top DCs by just about everyone who covers and coaches in the conference which is the exact opposite of what our constantly confused poster just stated above. Hell, starting off the 2nd series of downs on Stanford's very first drive the color announcer (Jessy Palmer) comments how the Ducks have all 11 guys at the line of scrimmage daring them to pass, but in Chicken Little's world it's 8 vs 3 all game long. While of course the last few games have not been shining moments for Oregon's D, I try to judge things from an overall viewpoint. By that standard once again Oregon's 2013 D has been much more effective then most... which is a good thing if you're rooting for the Ducks and not letting the disappointment of winning their 6th straight over the Beavs cloud matters.

Obviously the D hasn't been as good as most here had hoped it might be. Going into this season, easily the biggest question on the team was at LB. The unit had of course lost to graduation the #3 overall pick, a 2nd round pick who is running away with the ROY award & an absolute tackling machine in Michael Clay. The scheme they employ is designed to have the big boys up front occupy blockers and the LBs fill the gaps and make a majority of the stops. To my eyes, the new guys have fallen well short of filling the shoes of their predecessors. While it's been well documented that Oregon's LBs have complicated assignments/responsibilities, bottom line is this season they've been caught out of position a lot and RBs have regularly run through tackles for additional yards. Some of this drop off could be marked down to a lack of experience and some to the talent level as lets face it most units don't have two top picks on them. But without question every season praise & blame should (and does) fall on the coaches for their unit's production. They recruited the kids & they've coached them up. Certainly there is room for improvement from the young Linebacking unit and it's Aliotti's (& Don Pellum's) job to help make that happen. Those 3 departed LBs are good examples of the sort of players they are capable of developing

Calling on a proven winner to resign for fielding a good not great D this season is something I'm going to mock because it's A. ridiculous and B. (as SPD concisely noted) isn't happening. Nick is 59 years old and has many good years ahead of him. I'm siding with everyone from Ted Miller to David Shaw on this one and enjoying our :MARIS61: poster's endless spin cycle, confusing strait-forward facts, figures & statements beyond recognition and telling us neat stories like how he knows offense better then Chip and D better then Nick.

Losing Clay, Kiko and Dion was a huge blow to the defense. That was the heart of our defense last year.

I was disappointed with the D Line this year though. I expected more. I'm still not really convinced that Armstead shouldn't be on the offensive line.

The offense had injuries - it happens. The defense just fell apart. It wasn't a matter of them being "good, not great". They proved they could get the job done....until they just stopped doing it. They allowed a so-so Arizona team to blow them off the field. They allowed an OSU team that hasn't been able to run all season pile up yards.

Does anybody truly believe the coaches shouldn't take any heat for that?

I have to agree with quack, Aliotti makes no adjustments and the D seems confused. I think there's a reason Chip took Azzinaro with him and not Aliotti. The Dline play has been atrocious lately and that really exposes the inexperienced LB's leading to allot of confusion with backs getting to the second level or wide open receivers.

nice strawman you're arguing with. No one has said the coaches shouldn't take some heat or anything close to that. As for injuries, I suspect that there have been several nagging ones that we never learned of because of their policy. My first guess would be Wade Keliikipi

While I thionk Aliotti is a good coach, I also think he failed this year. I can let the Stanford game go due to the refs but he failed to make basic adjustments in the AZ & OSU game that is required by top programs.

Should he resign or be fired? No. But if the OSU's of the world run wild on us next year I think he will have to step down.
