Amazon US has become the latest retailer to sell out of next-gen consoles, after announcing it will no longer offer launch day editions of either the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

In a post on Facebook, the company explained that Standard Editions will still be offered, but these are unlikely to arrive on release day. It's unclear if more consoles will be allocated to the retailer as a result.

"After a crazy and exciting month, we’ve sold through our initial allocations of PS4 and Xbox One," the post reads. "Thank you to all who have ordered and shared your opinions. We have the Standard Editions for both consoles still available, but we can’t guarantee these at release. Please check back here as we’ll update you first if we receive further release day allocations."

It's hardly surprising; last month Amazon reported that the next-gen consoles had shattered its pre-order records, with as many as 2,500 next-gen console purchases per minute funnelling through the online retailer.

It's just the latest retailer to run out of initial stock for the consoles. Earlier this week we heard that GameStop was halting PS4 pre-orders, which was in turn followed by Best Buy declaring it was doing the same for the Xbox One.

Time is most certainly running out if you've yet to guarantee yourself a next-gen console at launch. Let us know if you've pre-ordered yet or not in the comments.

Be curious to see how many end up on craiglist/ebay for profit.

Seems like best buy has the best pre orders left. Everyone else is sold out.
