Methanol is very deadly. As little as 10ml can cause blindness and 15ml can kill you and both those amounts are very very small. Company i worked for many years brought methanol in by the rail car. Paint mfg. like Rodda and Miller paint purchased large amounts.

Pure ethanol is different from methanol as it isn't poisonous Unless a company had a special permit, any ethanol we sold had to be denatured with other products and the gasoline sold today contains around 10% of ethanol. We were governed under OLCC rules to bring in rail cars of ethanol.

Tip for the kids: drinking gasoline won't work out well for you, even though it does contain ethanol. But if you must drink gasoline, don't vape.

The story says 19 people. I don't see any mention of American tourists. Maybe you're conflating the deaths in the Dominican Republic from undetermined causes with these tainted alcohol deaths?
