There's more inside scoop on Timothy Michael Poe. It turns out he was never injured in battle.

What seemed to be one of the feel-good stories of "America's Got Talent" took some very bizarre turns this week, with the contestant's description of his background and a photo of him in combat not being what they were advertised to be.

Timothy Michael Poe, a former member of the Minnesota National Guard, wowed judges and audience members with his story of being injured in a grenade attack in Afghanistan in 2009, an injury that left him with a severe stutter that he could overcome only when he was singing.

And singing was something he learned to do while undergoing speech therapy for his stutter.

Well, where do we begin?

– First, the photo he sent the NBC series is not him, but rather is Staff Sgt. Norman Bone, according to an official military website, something Poe's fiancee acknowledged, calling it a "complete accident."

– Second, the Minnesota National Guard said, "Sgt. Poe's official military records do not indicate that he was injured by a grenade in combat while serving in Afghanistan in 2009, as he reports."

– Third, he's been the leader singer for the band Crawl Space for four years.

Poe is keeping mum and NBC isn't saying any more than he is.

The ex-wife of embattled AGT contestant Timothy Michael Poe says the aspiring country singer who stole America’s hearts with his touching story of being injured in combat is really an abusive liar, who she once had jailed for domestic violence.
Kelly Ballard — an Air Force veteran — says Tim, 35, even got another woman pregnant while she was deployed for ten months to Iraq in 2003!
“He ended up marrying her,” she tells AGTNews.com. “They got divorced in March of this year.”
During Monday night’s auditions — taped in April in Austin, TX — Poe, a one time magazine salesman, told the judges he had volunteered to help clear wounded people out of buildings in Afghanistan when he was hit by a grenade.
“It broke my back and gave me a brain injury,” he said. “That is the reason I stutter a little bit.”
But according to Ballard, none of that is true.
She tells The New York Post that Poe’s injuries came during training exercises in Mississippi and that “I have never heard him have a stutter like (he had on the show).”
“My son (Isaac) is 11,” she says. “He knows everything out of (Tim’s) mouth is a lie.”

Ballard says she caught her husband cheating in 1991 and after that the relationship headed straight down hill. “I had him arrested in June 2002 for domestic violence. After that, he vanished to Minnesota. He didn’t help out with our son at all.”
She also claims Poe has lied about his education.
“The whole time I have known him, I have never known him to be enrolled in any college,” she tells us. “There is a possibility he may have an associates degree from before I met him. On his Facebook page he says he has a Masters degree in project management.”
Oh, and that bit about how he never sang before a speech patholigist suggested it to help with the brain injury?
B.S., she says: he was the lead singer of a band in Rochester, Minnesota for four years.
So far, Poe has still declined to make any comments to the press.

Yes, the first thing I noticed was that she called him a liar, then said she caught the 35-year-old cheating in 1991.

Poe has declined multiple requests for comment from The Associated Press. Military records show he served with the Guard from December 2002 through May 2011, as a supply specialist. They show he was deployed in Kosovo from October 2007 to July 2008, and then served in Afghanistan for about a month in mid-2009. The sergeant was honorably discharged in 2011 because of a medical disability.
“His voice, and the fact that he was in the military, the true part, should’ve been enough to get him by,” Conroy said. “His singing alone is amazing, and I will never doubt that, but he goes a little too far.”
The 35-year-old San Antonio, Tex., man claimed when he spoke to WFAA-TV of Dallas last month that he was also wounded in Iraq in 2005, when his truck was hit by a roadside bomb.
In a detailed rebuttal Thursday, Lt. Col Kevin Olson, a spokesman for the Minnesota Army National Guard, wrote that none of the military records that Poe’s fiancée, Carrie Morris, provided to reporters back up his claims that he was ever injured in combat. However, he said, other documents indicate Poe suffered the injury that led to his medical retirement while training at Camp Atterbury in Indiana in mid-July 2009 before he deployed to Afghanistan. He also said there were no official records showing that he ever deployed to Iraq or was injured there. He said Poe reported to Camp Shelby in Mississippi “for pre-mobilization training on Sept. 21, 2005, but ultimately did not deploy” to Iraq.

I usually hate it when American Idol contestants tell a sob story. It always feels very manipulative. I watched this episode of AGT and was actually moved. He didn't seem like a liar at all. I'm impressed. He should move to LA in February for pilot season.
