An interesting article on Rep. Wilson's outburst

The bill's exact language: "Nothing in this subtitle shall allow federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully in the United States."

Hmmm.... I parse that to NOT say "This subtitle denies any federal payments for affordability credits..."

Such payments to illegals are already illegal, so this bill doesn't need to make them illegal. It merely needs to not make them legal.

I thought that showed very little class to shout that out during the presidential speech. . . I don't know what it is about politicans, but they so often show very little ability to control their actions or demonstrate very poor judgment.

And these are the poeple we elected to run our country . . .

The really amazing thing to me is that people think this is actually relevant. Heath care costs consume 1/6th of our GDP, $2.5 trillion dollars per year, and the most important thing to discuss about health care reform is whether it is too easy for illegal aliens to illegally obtain benefits?

aliens is shorter to type. I don't believe it is meant to imply they are from outer space. I'm not positive but I believe the word alien was used for people from other countries long before science fiction aliens were invented. Of course it does have the connotation of foreign, or strange, and people from other countries aren't really all that strange these days. It's the Americans that are strange.

I had posted that language earlier. I acknowledge what it says, but it doesn't matter what is in there if there's no enforcement, which is the real problem. It's a sneaky tactic to allow a loophole for de facto health care coverage (more than the emergency room) for illegal aliens. That's why when there was an amendment presented--twice--to specifically ban coverage for illegal aliens, the Democrats voted against it in committee.

Rep. Wilson is a member of a group called Sons of Confederate Veterans. A white supremacist, pro-segregation organization. Wilson as a state legislator was one of only 8 who voted to keep the Confederate flag flying over the state capitol. The organization he is part of includes members who are pro-secession and refuse to fly the American flag. They have in the past praised the Ku Klux Klan and opposed education for African-Americans.

That's the new hero of the tea bag wavers, radio spewers, and insurance company stooges.

I heard his congressional challenger is now up to 600k since the incident. :)

They want Obama to change the law passed in 1986 to ban it, but I don't think it's cut and dry. What happens if an illegal immigrant child has a disease like swine flu or TB and is denied treatment. The kid goes and plays at the public playground with other kids and gets them all sick.

I am not surprised. They should him to Dafur to get some culture.

This part may well be true.

But this part isn't.

wookee, that second part is way easier to believe. Think about the people that stand up and shout at town halls or protest taxes and call obama an "X-ist." Standing up and calling Obama a liar in the middle of his speech is EXACTLY the kind of person they want.

edit: not because of the racial part, they probably don't know any of that. Crandc was probably saying "This man is your hero. this man who did.... He is your hero."

i was just pointing out the insensitivity of that term. to me it's a racial pejorative

NO ONE gets denied treatment. Period. It's a matter of whether we have to pay for it.

It's so much easier to hate than to understand. Of course he must be some cartoon-character racist in your mind.

I heard his congressional challenger is now up to 600k since the incident. :)

That would be like giving $600K to a conservative right-wing candidate that wishes to represent Berkeley, CA. It's money wasted.

Who should pay for it then? Maybe an entrepreneur can establish illegal immigration insurance backed by AIG.

We have the First Amendment in this country. If someone is offended if they're given the label of "alien", then they're free to leave. Luckily, we don't have to police our own thoughts to ensure they fit with the current political climate.

Oh, I don't know...the illegal immigrant? I say, fix them up and then deport them. I'll happily pay the bill to stabilize them if it means they're deported. To me, that's a fair trade.

And when they don't have the money to pay?

And when they don't have the money to pay?

Then we do what we do now, except we don't release them, we deport them. We then bill their native country and they can extract the money from them.

S.C.'s Wilson Rakes In $750,000 in Less Than 48 Hours; Opponent Tops $1 Million

Updated 7:50 p.m.

By Paul Kane

With a political arms race in full force, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) has raised almost $750,000 in less than 48 hours since his shout of "You lie!" to President Obama during the Wednesday address to Congress, almost matching the Internet-fueled haul of his likely Democratic opponent.

A senior GOP official said Wilson, who apologized to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel after the health-care speech but has since refused a more public apology, has turned his own previous sleepy campaign machine into an Web-friendly effort. Just as liberals have poured cash into the campaign of Rob Miller, who lost to Wilson by almost eight percentage points in 2008, conservatives are pouring contributions into Wilson's campaign at an astonishing rate.

Miller, a former Iraq war veteran, has raised more than $1 million for his 2010 rematch with Wilson, according to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Republicans expect Wilson to also top more than $1 million by Monday because of the immense publicity he's received in the last 48 hours. In the relatively inexpensive South Carolina district, which takes in the southern portion of the state, the two opponents will likely have their two-year budgets filled in less than a week, strategists say.

To put this fund-raising haul in perspective, Wilson, by early next week, could equal the total amount of money he raised in the entire two-year-election cycle of 2008, when he raised a little more than $1.1 million.

I wonder what the voters in his district think. I could imagine they are quite proud of him, or perhaps after Sanford, they'll be in the mood to get rid of embarrassing politicians.

SC is one of the few states I've never visited. Don't know what folks are like down there.
