Chip is now 17-1 in conference play. Still baffles me how we can be SO good in conference, and so not great against OOC ranked teams.

The Pac 12 is a tad over rated? Also, if you look at it, our OOC games come when teams have all summer or a month before a bowl game to prepare for the Ducks

Wish I knew, HCP. I googled it, and couldn't come up with anything. I would bet it belongs to USC and just reading about the USC program was a reminder of how dominate they were and how much sanctions can hurt:

The Trojans have suffered only three losing seasons since 1961 and have captured 37 Pac-12 titles (including PCC titles, which today's Pac-12 recognizes as its own). This gives them the 4th most conference championships of any NCAA school, and twice as many as any other Pac-12 member team. From 2002 through 2008, the Trojans won or shared an unprecedented seven consecutive Pac-10 titles.

The Trojans have played in 47 bowl games, a total that trails only Alabama's 58 bowl appearances. USC has the highest winning percentage in bowl games—66%—among teams with at least 15 bowl appearances. Finally, USC's 33 Rose Bowl appearances and 24 victories are the most of any school in a single bowl.

The Trojans have been a football powerhouse throughout NCAA history and claim 11 national championships.[2] In total, 472 Trojans have been taken in the NFL Draft, more than from any other university.

When Oregon is ranked, USC struggles big time....

It has a lot to do with how weak the PAC 12 is right now. Washington sucks, Washington State sucks, USC is weak, UCLA is terrible, Arizona St is meh.... this is probably the weakest I've seen the conference (in my lifetime). Oregon is the top team and Stanford is really good, but how close is the third best team? I don't think very close.

Why does UO recently lose the big OOC games? Aside from the BSU loss (which I consider an aberration) there are a few things in common with the other 3 losses:

1) It does help when a team has so much time to work on defending the read option offense.

2) Each team had a tremendous D-line that really outplayed the UO O-line. That allowed:

3) The linebackers to really fill the gaps well. They also flood the box and take away cut back lanes well.

4) Kelly stays with the run way too long. Poor offensive play calling.

Finally ran across some info. Paraphrased and put into white-trash language, of course, so I don't have to do one of them links:

Let's acknowledge at the outset that Oregon's done gone and won 13; the USC run 2003-2006 was 27. Also, USC's run was punctuated by BCS wins those toejams. On the other hand, the 2005 USC wins have been vacated. And Oregon's streak is still alive.

USC had an average MOV of 22.67; Oregon's is at 19.23. USC's were more of a mix of blowouts and close games; 9 wins were of 10 points or less; 4 wins were 40+. For Oregon, it is three wins of 10 points or less, and one 40+ blowout.

Two pretty dominating teams with some close wins from time to time.

Washington had 14 straight conference wins from 1990-1992.
