...33% +/-!

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Close to one in three American teens and young adults get arrested by age 23, according to a new study that finds more of them are being booked now than in the 1960s.

Those arrests are for everything from underage drinking and petty theft to violent crime, researchers said. They added that the increase might not necessarily reflect more criminal behavior in youth, but rather a police force that's more apt to arrest young people than in the past.

...which means the majority of young males have a police record and hate the police state. Way to avoid revolution, smart guys.

I wonder if the ever expanding commercial prison business is a factor?

I got arrested once. Driving on a suspended license. That was before I was 23.

I think Texas has a weird system about being tardy or truant in school that involves going to court. I wonder if that has an influence on these numbers

...and MORE, prepare for war at your door!

Nestled amid plains so flat the locals joke you can watch your dog run away for miles, Fargo treasures its placid lifestyle, seldom pierced by the mayhem and violence common in other urban communities. North Dakota’s largest city has averaged fewer than two homicides a year since 2005, and there’s not been a single international terrorism prosecution in the last decade.

But that hasn’t stopped authorities in Fargo and its surrounding county from going on an $8 million buying spree to arm police officers with the sort of gear once reserved only for soldiers fighting foreign wars.

Every city squad car is equipped today with a military-style assault rifle, and officers can don Kevlar helmets able to withstand incoming fire from battlefield-grade ammunition. And for that epic confrontation—if it ever occurs—officers can now summon a new $256,643 armored truck, complete with a rotating turret. For now, though, the menacing truck is used mostly for training and appearances at the annual city picnic, where it’s been parked near the children’s bounce house.

“Most people are so fascinated by it, because nothing happens here,” says Carol Archbold, a Fargo resident and criminal justice professor at North Dakota State University. “There’s no terrorism here.”

Were those 33% of kids breaking the law, or were they rounded up Gestapo-style for being (religion/race/color/disability/smart/dumb/etc)?

way to go, parents & teachers!

I got arrested at age 20 for open container and drinking underage. I learned my lesson, paid my fine, and got on with my life with a new respect for society's laws.

Fucking fascist cops!!

You can't really take a two-handed Broadsword of Doom to your neighbor's cat for the 8 experience points and 2% chance of finding magical treasure without consequences. This is the real world, maxiep. Roll the 20-sided like everyone else.

Unless you're LARP-ing with Channing Frye, that is.

33% arrested, included in that is underage drinking.

So they missed about 60% of those committing crimes.

No, Iraqis killed 1.5M of their neighbors. In part b/c there weren't enough law enforcement to prevent it. Like the dozens who died after we left the country this week.

It's a pleasant fiction, though, for someone with your worldview.

And in keeping with my view, I hope that anyone responsible for breaking the law is punished. That's not the view of the majority of the people commenting on this, though.

so is smoking a joint and jaywalking. jus' sayin'.

And the US killed Iraqis by propping up dictators and giving weapons to Saddam Hussein.

It is pleasant fiction to ignore our incompetence.

so did our ied's blow those people up, HK? Bush's fault? Military-industrial complex at work? Making a political statement to get the US out of their country?

Nope. Just bad people doing illegal things.

...unless you invade a country, destroy whatever rule of law they had with house to house executions of anyone your informers say disagrees with America, and replace it with a massive torture state. 50 years from now, they may succeed in getting their electricity back. Most had 24-hour air conditioning under Sadaam.

My world view is, of course, the same as that of almost all Earthlings and the majority of Americans. (I have previously linked to polls here showing that even at its peak of support at the start, the majority of Americans opposed the Iraq war. And it dropped fast from there. And I've linked to sources that 1.5 to 2M Iraqis died because of US aggression, and yes, some of those were the puppet state killing Iraqis.)

yes, most states smoking a joint will get you a small fine, same with jaywalking

Then why do people like jlprk (post 3) bitch about a "prosecutorial" state, Maris (post 7) complain about a state where justice is doled out based on wealth (while stating with Natebishop that 2 guys should do 2 years for criminal mischief in Post 6 and 7), while multiple-time child rapists in Vermont getting 60 days, a rapist-kidnapper who got off 40 years early and did it again.

Sometimes, jaywalking gets you killed (Dante Stallworth's prison term).

If you were a professional in intelligence, you wouldn't be showing off the goods. So you must collate information on people as the amateur that you are.

I enjoy it on the rare occasions when you show your red ass. The anger and frustration is palpable. You're a little teapot...
