Stepan is believed to be seeking “at least seven years” and in the range of $7.25 to $7.5 million. (NY Post)

At this point it seems as if Stepan will head to arbitration on Monday and the Rangers will have to decide if they want to elect a one-year or two-year award. (NY Post)
 
This seems very similar to Callahan where the Rangers offered him money he wasn't worth and the moron turned it down, they they traded him. If Stepan thinks he's worth that, I don't see him here for much longer. A center who has never had 60 points and sucks on faceoffs thinks he's a 7 million dollar player. He's beyond stupid.
 
If it ends up anymore than 6.25 the Rangers are getting burned, again, like they did with Girardi.
 
Backes is too old. He's 31 and he will be a UFA next year. Probably going to ask for a 5 year, 30 million deal as his last contract. No thanks.
 
See this is what we were saying about Buffalo giving O'Reilly that contract. Now Stepan is asking for the same years and money. When one team sets the market with an overpay it screws everybody. That being said there will be a deal made before arbitration. The sides will be too close on years and money to find common ground and get things done.
 
If he wants 7 years offer him 7, but at $6.5 which I still think is overpaying for a 2nd line center. Yes hes our first line center, but let's be honest. He's a second line talent
 
Good for the Rangers only offering 5.2. He's not worth more than that until he becomes a man and actually stops winning a crappy 40 to 44% of his draws. He's like a little girl in the faceoff dot. The fact he is asking for 7.25, can't win a draw and never has had 60 points is a damn good reason to trade him. That would be a tough deal to make. Not because he isn't replaceable. Because he's a righty shot which we barely have and teams would have to give some salary back most likely to afford him.
 
The Rangers aren't offering 5.2. that's the number they submitted to the arbitrator to set the range of an award.

From the same article: "The Rangers are believed to be offering Stepan SIX-YEARS at between $6.5 million and $6.75 million while Stepan is believed to be asking for SEVEN-YEARS at between $7.25 and $7.5 million per season."

So Stepan can take the 6.5m-6.75m over 6 years that's on the table. Or, if it comes down to the arbitrator's award, it will be between 5.2 and 7.2 (the number Stepan submitted to the arbitrator), probably around what we're offering now anyway, but it will only be for 1 or 2 years and we'll have to go through this same song and dance again in the near future. But by that time Step will be approaching UFA.

That's the danger of not getting him signed. The arbitration award is going to be a similar cap hit to what we're offering, but it means we'll probably lose him in a year or two for nothing unless he's traded.

I don't believe the Rangers offered him 6.75 because I don't think they believe he is any better than Brassard. What the Rangers offered Brassard on paper was stupid. He haver had 50 points and they offered him 5 million a season. However, they lucked out in that Brassard has gotten better and has been their best playoff guy. So, what was a dumb contract offer has now turned out to be a bargain with what other moron GM's are offering similar players.
 
I liked the Brass deal the second it was signed, and that deal will be great for us the next few seasons.

Step was a pain to deal with last time, and I guess it is the same this time. I thought we could get it done for 6 years around 6 mill per +/-, but obviously that was way off. If we truly are offering 6.5 per for 6 or 7 years and he isn't taking it, we should deal him...period. I don't want to give him more than that.

The ROR deal doesn't come into play for the arbitrator, but obviously it can play a role in what Step is asking for. BUT even with that one off terrible deal, Step is NOT a 7 mill player, and no shot I pay him as one. I would deal him before I gave him a long term deal with an AAV that starts with a 7.

In all seriousness, we cant and shouldnt go a penny higher than 6.7. 7 years really scares me, but at the end of the day that only takes him to 32 years old and he's shown to be very durable (mostly because he avoids contact like the plague but that's another conversation).

If we end up at 7 years, 6.7 I wont love it but it wouldnt be the end of the word compared to the current contract market. Ryan Kesler just signed 6 years 6.875 per and he's already 30.
 
Time for gorton to pull the trigger on callahan junior and see what assets teams will give up for him. Stepan is far from irreplaceable. He sucks in the circle, not a sniper by any means and for what he is looking for has yet to crack the 60 pt mark. If rangers sign him for 6.5 or more (god no) what the hell do we do when kreids comes up next year and hayes and even though I think he's traded soon Yandle. If step gets that kind of money some major piece on this team will most likely be traded.
 
Trade him with Glass and a prospect to the Canes for Staal who they probably could sign next year.
 
We'd only be able to offer E. Staal a little more than we're offering Stepan now, and I'm not sure he's willing to take that. I wouldnt want to trade a young kid like Stepan for just 1 year of E. Staal. Maybe we could get permission to talk extension before pulling the trigger?

Kreider, Hayes, Yandle, Miller and Etem all need new deals next year. Adding E. Staal to that list would make it a nightmare.
 
I don't know, Staal is now over 30 so i think you get him in the 7 range which isn't much more than Stepan. Unfortunately you'd have to probably give up Buchnevich or Skjei with him so that might be tough.

has some balls.
 
Stepan signed before arbitration hearing. No word on terms yet. Still think anything above $6M a year is too much for him, but if it's for a long term deal WITH NO NO TRADE CLAUSE then I'm ok with it I guess. Just hamstrings the hell out of us next season.
 
The fact they paid this assclown 6 million when he can't win more than 44% of his draws is mind boggling.
