Honoapiilani Highway now open
POSTED: May 4, 2010
Honoapiilani Highway reopened to traffic in both directions shortly before 10 a.m. today after being closed for more than eight hours because of a brush fire that broke out Monday afternoon in Ukumehame.
Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said it wasn't clear whether the highway might need to be shut down again.
The highway had been closed between Maalaea and Launiupoko.
Police evacuated about 100 residents in the early-morning hours today while closing the road at 1:30 after winds began pushing the fire toward homes in Olowalu. The Red Cross opened shelters at the Lahaina Civic Center and Maui War Memorial Gym.
Wailuku-bound traffic was only allowed on the Kahekili Highway through Kahakuloa, but police discouraged motorists from taking that route because the road is narrow and winding, and can be hazardous.
The fire has burned an estimated 1,100 acres, but no injuries or property damage have yet been reported.
