Chris Haynes: Speaking of Will Barton, he signed a 3-year deal with the #Blazers. The third year is a team option. 1 minute ago

Chris Haynes: Kaleb Canales says F Will Barton will start in place of G Wesley Matthews who will sit it out. 2 minutes ago

Sorry, mods. Didn't know where to post this. But it's fairly worthy of its' own thread. They signed him to a 3-year deal. A second rounder?

That tells me they have confidence in his ability to grow and develop, that they did view him as a first-rounder, and they want to make sure they lock up his Bird Rights.

Congrats to Will! He won't have to look over his shoulder on money matters, he can concentrate on ball.

Agreed, though I hope he keeps that chip on his shoulder.

If Portland really does believe he's a steal, this was a wise move. And with the 3rd year being a team option, this move is little-risk, but could end up being very prudent.

not sure about the money, but this is actually a pretty crappy deal for him, most 2nd rounders get 1 or 2 year deals or 1 + 1 team option year

im sure he would much rather not have the team option on year 3, if he blows up ala wes mathews, hes gonna have to wait 3 years instead of 1 to get paid

good for the blazers though!

It's exactly why I love this deal. If he blows up (or even becomes a big part of the rotation), though, I'd expect Portland to re-negotiate and extend before year three.

have you ever heard of a nba contract getting renegotiated? last time a team tried to do something like that, boozer went to the jazz and fucked cleveland in the ass

He looks better tonight. I think he definitely has potential.

With the new CBA, if he does work out and Blazers keep him for 3 years, does tab give Blazers his Bird rights?

I wouldn't be surprised if Portland was able to extend him while he's under contract, just like other players under contract get extensions. No matter, he'll be a RFA with full Bird Rights in the end if we want to go that route.

Well, his summer league showing so far would certainly not earn him a spot on our pre-season roster. He's been really bad, and scorers like him are supposed to thrive in d-league.

I don't think he's been that bad. The guy plays good defense and he runs the break well. His scoring has been rough, but the guy has potential. He's looked better than Nic Batum did during his SL.

His scoring his ehh... I dunno how it will be in the pros but he is so out of control in summer league. Its like he wants to make a name for himself so badly he is rushing everything.

Exactly, I don't think he's built a comfort level.

Maybe, but if he breaks his leg tomorrow, he has 2 years to recover while getting paid.

hmm just watching the game now, I think you have to look deeper than the box score on this guy, I think he has that "it" factor, I think he gets it

It's clear he needs to gain some mass. That will help him finish even as he absorbs contact from the D. But I like his potential.

Agree with DLJ and NB3. I see a lot of potential as a glue guy. Gets into passing lanes.

While everyone here liked the pick at draft time, I wasn't high on will. Now, people are knocking him and I am coming around thinking he can be a solid player in the league.

First, he has better athleticism then I thought he would have, especially on defense.

Second, he is skinny as hell, but his body looks like its not done maturing, so my guess is he will put on some weight, and even thou skinny, he does not seem too weak.

Third, he seemed to play well with others and had a team game.

I would be surprised if he ever becomes a top flight player, but not at all surprised if he becomes a good bench player or even an average starter if all the stars align.

I think he'll be better when surrounded by better talent a la Batum. He was terrible that first SL.

He has a very augman-like quality about him. I hope he can play that type of role on our team.

I don't get this signing. Why would Portland want to sign him up for three years before he's even completed two summer league games, not to mention a single real NBA game? What if the guy absolutely sucks when the regular season starts? Then we're stuck with him for the next 3 years.

The third year is a team option. You are only stuck with him for 2 years at a cheap deal.

3rd year is a team option, and the contract is likely close to the minimum, if he absolutely sucks, his 3rd year isn't picked up, and the 2nd year near the minimum hardly hurts.
