I posted this on the Greg Oden Cansucko whispers thread, but I was thinking about this and how it could possibly be the new direction of the NBA.
My proposed offer (incentive program) was this:
I think the best possible deal for Oden; would be giving him incentives. Maybe a base salary of 8-10 mil per season with perks each season.
1.) 1 million bonus if he averages a double double
2.) 500k bonus for over 1.5 blocks a game
3.) 1.5 mil bonus for averaging more than 13 rebounds a game.
4.) 1.5 mil bonus for playing more than 60 games a season.
Something like that. I don't know if the team would be on the hook for the entire amount (In terms of cap); but if their was an incentive program that could net Oden 12.5-14.5 mil per season, but can drop to 8-10 mil if injured, it would be best for both sides.
What would be nice is if the NBA and CBA agreed that you could offer incentives that will not account for cap. So a player like Roy (getting max of 15-16 mil per season) could actually be re-worked based on performance, health and individual stats.
A new Roy contract (Now obviously he is already guaranteed, but I am just using his salary as a reference.)
Say he gets 16 mil per season, but 6 mil is based on perks or incentives. LIKE:
Base salary of 10 mil (Only applies to cap):
Bonuses:
1.) 2 mil for scoring over 20 a game
2.) 1 mil for playing over 60 games a season
3.) 500 k for averaging over 4 boards a game
4.) 1 mil for more than 4 assists a game
5.) 500 k for more than 1 steal a game
6.) 1 mil for shooting over 45%
Basically this would give him a total of 16 mil for the season, but would only account for 10 mil on the Blazer's cap. Probably not gonna happen, but I think if the NBA and CBA agree to this; you can actually have a serious "Hard Cap" and teams would be able to equal the playing field.
