Be honest: would you have traded Kersey/Duck/Alaa for Olajuwon in 1992?

I remember this being discussed and I was against it. I was too in love with our guys. Looking back, we probably would’ve won a title. In the end, I think Houston wanted more but when that deal was on the table, were you for or against it? If you’re 38 or younger, just let the adults speak.

Houston was ecstatic to be picking 'hometown' Hakeem. No way, at all, they would have traded him for that package

a few years later, the Blazers turned down the offer from Philly of Charles Barkley for Kersey & Robinson. I love the memory of both Blazer players but I always though that was a big mistake

Tough to say what I would have thought at age 13, given I don't remember hearing this rumor. But that was the same summer Phoenix dealt for Barkley, and I was pretty upset about that whole deal. So I think that, yes, I would have wanted to one-up the Suns by trading for a superior player, especially given the Phi-Slamma-Jamma connection

There were so many rumors going on around that time. "Hakeem was seen walking around Beaverton" and shit like that.

But I would've traded my mother for Hakeem

I don't remember it. But that would have been a no-brainer. All I remember were the non-stop calls criticizing Duck's play.

Physical or mental age??? Big differences there.
Hindsight os 20/20. Of course i would now. Then? Dont know. Thats 30 years ago!

Akeem was drafted in 1984. I’m talking about 1992, after the Barkley talk.

You have to remember we were one year removed from a 63-19 season. We loved our guys.

And just watched Jordan show us that our team simply wasn't good enough to beat his. If an Olajuwon deal were available, Blazer fans would have welcomed it.

I don't remember any of that. The thought was at the time we were close against the Bulls, and the year prior had the best record in the NBA, so we had a great chance to win the title in 1992-23. Rod Strickland was a great new addition, we had young Cliff Robinson improving, and we were delusional as always about our rookies, in this case Tracy Murray.

Yeah we'd have loved to add Barkley or Olajuwon, but I don't remember any Blazer fans having a sentiment that our team simply wasn't good enough. Now the following year after the first round loss in 1993 yeah there was much more concern.

you mean when Houston was just entering their window of contention because of Hakeem? that Hakeem?

Well sure now it looks silly. But I don't think Houston was expected to contend when they did. Who was their second best player? I mean yes Hakeem was always a stud, but Sam Cassell, Robert Horry, Kenny Smith, etc were sort of nobodies that suddenly played great. They also had a dominant star surrounded by 3pt shooters about 20 years ahead of their time.

I didn't follow the whole league as close back then so someone else may remember better.

I think this is some B.S. I was here during that time and didn't remember this at all . I don't think Houston was ever trading Hakeem. But if it was for those players, the GM of the Blazers ought to be ashamed of himself for not making that happen. Clyde would have gone to Paul and said make it happen.

I do remember this one, and thought get Barkley. I was in favor of adding players to help Clyde.

I was working at Herzog Meyer, and one of the guys in parts

"Sorry Moms, but you've got to go, to make way for Hakeem".

Barkley was the MVP in 1993, and if we hadn't been stupid we'd have won the title with him. Idiots.

A 1 year old would say yes.

Nope. The trade was around the 1992 trade deadline. We hadn’t lost to Chicago yet.

NOW in hindsight. I’m asking about fans following the team THEN. Kersey was extremely popular and that team was incredible. I don’t think most people were in favor of breaking it up.

Houston wasn’t “entering a window of contention.,” lol. They were about to get lucky Jordan would retire. You clearly weren’t alive then.

You are correct.
