A few days ago, my kids saw a swarm of bees fly into my yard and disappear into a tree....after further examination, theres a hive the size of a human head about 10 feet from my front door....I was going to get some wasp spray, spray it on the hive from my doorway, and slam the door before they could get to me....today, I went to my Dad's for Memorial Day and had a talk with my grand father, who is a retired Professor of Entomology at the University of Florida....what he told me has freaked me out a bit....about half the bees in Florida are africanized bees, which are very agreesive and will continue stinging you until you are dead....he said they have been known to sting 500 times each and there could be as many as 100,000 in a hive that size....they will chase you up to a quarter of a mile, if you jump in water, they will wait for you to come up for air, they will wait outside your door until someone comes out and then try to kill them....WTF? It sounded ridiculous to me, so I googled it and it checks out....who knew there were aggressive vengeful bees flying around this country? So, im not going to mess with the hive....Im calling the county this morning when they open to find out what to do....

BTW is that a picture of the hive at your place? or a random pic.

1. Try to establish what type of bee is in the hive.
2. Call a professional if the hive is large or difficult to access
3. If they are honeybee, people may remove for free.
4. Limit your beehive removal and extermination to small hives that can be easily managed with widely available spray insecticides. Avoid large hives and honey producing hives.
5. Wear shoes, socks, long sleeves and other appropriate clothing when going near a hive
6. Attempting to kill bees at night has pros and cons
Bees are less active at night
Bees will likely all be at the hive
It's harder to see and effectively kill bees at night
You may miss bees or smaller hives nearby

Box Trap Method for Some Bee Species
Get a cardboard box, about medium size. Buy some sticky traps and place them inside.
Take the center of a few flowers, (pollen works best) and sprinkle on the sticky traps.
Cut a hole, about 3 inches around, just enough for those bees to come charging in.
Try pouring some honey on the sticky traps as well, to lure more bees.
Place the cardboard box close to the hive, about 5-10 feet away.
Wait. Pretty soon, many of the bees will be stuck in the box, and you can call someone to haul them away. Use extreme caution as many bees will still be alive and angry. Don't go near the box.
Use an insecticide to kill any residual bees and a queen if she didn't leave the hive.
Seal all access to the hive so future swarms don't find it and take up residence.

Insecticide Method for Small Hives
Purchase a can on Insecticide.
Look for cans which offer long range spraying
Spray the nest and poison the bees and the nest.
Avoid falling bees and bees that escape the spray.
Once it is inactive and safe to go near, knock down the nest
Use caution the bees may still be alive!
Carry the nest to a safe area where it can be burned (optional)

My brother and I when we were younger had a wasp nest like that and we threw rocks at it, but I forget if we got to know it down that way. lol after every rock we threw we ran away yelling. It was so much fun. lol

Bees gone, but in the craziest way....1st, I got an estimate to remove them by a profesional....$195....I wasnt happy when I heard that, and I was fully prepared to fight them all with kung fu bee nut punches....then my wife had an MS flair up and I had to call an ambulance....they came in with sirens and lights blaring and one of the EMT's got stung....an hour later, someone from the county showed up and removed the hive....so if this happens to you, just get someone official stung and all will be taken care of....
