My wife, her parents and I are all making lists of our favorite films over the past 2 decades. I'm going to buy DVD's of all films on the lists missing from our current collections.

So here's my list for the 1990's:

Fargo
Dark City
Pulp Fiction
Usual Suspects
City of Lost Children
The Shawshank Redemption
Buffalo '66
Groundhog Day
6th Sense
12 Monkeys

Are you not aware of the awesomeness of torrents? ...not that I would ever do that

I don't know why, but I've always been fine with the idea of stealing music, but not movies. Completely illogical when I sit here and think about it. Not that I'd steal music. Ahem.

Schindler's List
Silence of the Lambs
American Beauty
Thin Red Line
Green Mile

Hmmm. Those ones are making me re-think my list. Pretty hard to argue that 12 Monkeys is superior to Silence of the Lambs or American Beauty.

Ah, I didn't know we were looking for a top 10!

Oh man, that is difficult.

If I had to pick one favorite it'd have to be this gem:

Schindler's List
Dumb & Dumber
Quiz Show
Pulp Fiction
The 6th Sense
American Beauty
Fight Club
Groundhog Day
Dark City
L.A. Confidential
Rushmore
The Truman Show
The Shawshank Redemption
Waiting For Guffman

Good call. Wes Anderson's movies are my favourites, and I think he reached even higher levels with later movies, but this is a definite '90s pick for me.

Sorry about that. I should've clarified. I am trying to finalize a top 10. It's getting harder the longer this thread goes.

Pulp Fiction is my best film of the decade.

Usual Suspects I think has always been a good, but not truly great film. It never was in any of my "Top 10" lists. I guess I didn't like it as much as some people. So often those "gimick" movies don't wear as well. I think over time that has been born out. It has faded. Sixth Sense too.

Whereas other movies you have on your list like Pulp Fiction, Shawshank, Groundhog Day, and Fargo hold up very well upon repeated viewings.

Here would be my Top 10 of the 90's of Holywood movies you actually want to watch over and over again:

Pulp Fiction (All-time Top Movie)
Goodfellas (All-time Top Movie)
Shawshank (All-time Top Movie)
Silence of the Lambs
Unforgiven
Fargo
The Matrix
Forest Gump
Terminator 2
LA Confidential

And for Movie Night with the small kids:

Toy Story
Lion King

I see you point, somewhat. Some gimmicks wear thin quickly for me--particularly fight sequences and car chases. But surprise twists don't really wear out. Even though I know it's going to happen, there are scenes in Dark City, Sixth Sense and The Usual Suspects that so shocked me the first time that I find it really easy to go back and remember. I think it's because most films are so terribly predictable--even a lot of the ones I listed (Groundhog Day, Buffalo 66, Shawshank Redemption). I have an immense amount of respect for a film that can truly surprise me. You call it a gimmick, I call it a treat.

btw--some damned nice picks, Masbee. I gotta figure out what to cut out to add Unforgiven.

The only two on your list I really question are The Matrix and T2.

Had the Matrix never had sequels, I might agree with you. But I'm afraid it's legacy is stained by two horrible sequels. It may not be fair, but what can I do? Every time I watch the original I can't help but think about the wretchedness of the sequels, and it ruins the experience.

T2 was a great action film, and I might've agreed with you when I was 10 years younger. But anymore I find it hard to rate almost any action film that high. Metabolism must be slowing or something.

Rushmore is one of those movies I've been meaning to see forever. Given that you liked Dark City (almost nobody I know besides me puts it on a "Best of the 90's" list) I'm going to go and buy it.

Yeah, what I mean is that so often a "gimmick" movie (storyline gimmick) that is popular and well regarded fades more over time than standard script movies. But, not always. I think Groundhog and Gump are still worth watching. I won't watch Sixth Sense anymore. Just my personal reaction.

If I was creating a Best films of the 90's list, they wouldn't be on it. You aren't doing that. You are buying DVD's. You can buy movies because the film is suppose to be the "best" and it will sit on the shelf gathering dust, or you can buy movies that people actually watch. So, I put on the list movies that you can see over and over and still want to watch them and from a mix of types so you have variety: Comedy; Drama; Western; Sci-Fi/Action; Thriller.

Now, mind you it is my list. If you think you won't watch action movies at home - fine - delete them. But if you want a couple of full-bore, all-out popcorn action flicks on the list, are there any better? I mostly agree though, as I don't watch these or other action flicks nearly as often as most of the other movies on the list.

That's a really good point. It's why I wouldn't add Schindler's List. Every time I'd open my DVD collection I'd be depressed, and feel a little guilty and superficial that I was watching Groundhog Day instead.

So yeah, I see why it's there now. Hmmm. Still not convinced, but I get it.

Sorry guys, but you've got to put Reservoir Dogs on your lists.

Obviously there's a lot to name but I"m going to say some that haven't really been said.

What's eating Gilbert Grape - Good flick, love Dicaprio's and Depp's acting. Though I've never did dig Juliette Lewis
Ed Wood - If you ever want to get into a creative median this is definitely a film you should check out.
Trois Coluers: Rouge - Or known as Red in English. This is seriously one of the most brilliant films of all time.
As Good As it gets - Jack Nicholson's acting is superb in this film and is one of my all time favorites because of the relationships with each character.
Princess Mononoke - Yeah I know it's an animated film but it is just epic. If anyone seen Spirited Away this is another masterpiece by director Hayao Miyazaki

If I had to make a top 10 of the 90's

Schindlers List
Pulp Fiction
Goodfellas
Shawshank Redemption
"Red"
Silence Of the Lambs
Fargo
Unforgiven
Malcolm X
Saving Private Ryan
