The Nets took charge down the stretch with six straight points, starting with a dunk by Sean Williams. After Roger Mason missed a 3-pointer at the other end, Williams slammed home another, with Carter assisting on both.
The Wizards closed to within three, but missed their only shot at a tie and a Carter offensive board with four seconds to go sealed the game for the Nets.
