Q: Do you think that the people who invented the first cell phones ever thought that their revolutionary idea would ever be the key instrument in modern sports scandals surrounding various professional athletes' members?
-- James, Cornwall, N.Y.

SG: I want to know when it reaches the point that it's NOT news that an athlete sexted photos of his own johnson. What number do we need to hit? Two hundred? Four hundred? Five hundred? By the way, there are only two months left in 2010 and I still haven't seen "Avatar," Greg Oden's dong or Brett Favre's dong. I am holding the fort.

Q: At what point do I kill myself over the Oden/Durant thing? Do I wait for Durant's first MVP? Or his finals MVP? Or Oden's first game back where he looks great for two minutes before picking up three fouls and hitting the bench?
-- Kellen, Portland

SG: You can't seriously consider it unless he passes Jordan for titles and MVPs. That reminds me, I have a few gambling tips for the 2010-11 NBA season (you know, if gambling were legal).

The layups? Blake Griffin for Rookie of the Year (2-to-1 odds; only way he loses is if he gets hurt) and Durant for the scoring title (2-to-1 odds; that's like stealing). For a long shot bet, I like Kevin Love for the rebounding title (12-to-1 odds; he's the only rebounder on that Minnesota team and has a 13 RPG season in him). For the MVP? I like Durant (5-2 odds) because he's going to have a monster year for a potential 60-win team; he's a feel-good vote (remember, writers are saps); and most importantly, the King James backlash has crested to the point that Miami needs to win 70-plus and LeBron needs to average 30 and a triple-double to get enough begrudging votes.

That's the single weirdest subplot of the NBA season: A back-to-back MVP hitting his prime switched to a better team and somehow lost 99 percent of his "best player alive" momentum. How can LeBron James -- someone whose first seven seasons ranked alongside Wilt, Bird, Magic, Oscar, Michael and Kareem as one of the greatest starts ever to an NBA career -- suddenly be underrated? It's insane. There's a decent chance he might rip through the league like a tsunami this season.

Bill Simmons is a bitter human being

new mailbag quote:

"ESPN Rip City" -- Wall-to-wall Blazers coverage delivered in the most ingratiating way possible for those soccer mom fanatics from Portland. That's right, gushing hyperbole about every Blazer combined with vitriolic attacks on every media member who dares to cross them! Running features include, "Brandon Roy vs. Michael Jordan: Closer Than You Think," "Why Wesley Matthews Was a Bigger Summer Signing Than LeBron" and "Oden vs. Durant: This Isn't Over Yet."

lol..... of course soccer mom #1 posted this thread.

Re: Bill Simmons is a bitter human being

I think Bill is on to something. I've never seen a fan base collectively believe that their team's players are so potential laden or about to bust out and have all-star years as so many of "we" do. Likewise this post almost proves his premise that we're a thin skinned insecure bunch

I think it's pretty clear that Blazers fans bombard him with hate mail when he says anything that is even remotely non-complimentary of the team (forget even blatant negativity). I listened to his podcast the other day with Joe House and they were talking about the over-unders for each team, and you could tell he was already dreading the backlash for initially suggesting that the Blazers were probably going to under-perform their projected win total coming out of Vegas.

My advice? Lighten up people, he doesn't hate our team, he doesn't hate our city, he just doesn't think we're elite and the Blazers are not elite yet -- you gotta get out of the first round to be considered elite (OKC being the exception because they have an MVP candidate on their team). The proof is in the team's play and they'll either make that leap to elite status or they won't and none of it will be influenced by the opinions or comments of Bill Simmons or any other national sports writer.

nik.... be prepared for a full blown shit storm

even in fantasy drafts.... no blazer go very high. roy gets picked after westbrook, rose, and nash. la gets drafted after millsap, landry. i mean that is all you really need to know about the blazers roster.

You could say the same about Celtic players.

That's terrible logic.

The Blazers play at a slower pace, so their statistics are deflated. It doesn't mean that they're bad basketball players in real life just because they aren't great in fantasy basketball.

There will be no shit storm - because Nik usually provides logic for his posts, does not flip-flop and does not call anyone that likes the Blazers homer or delusional.

We might not all agree with Nik all the time, but we respect his opinion and delivery.

lol fantasy drafts are your new reason for hating on the team? I thought you were better than that ol Mixie Moo.

I'm sure the 2004 Pistons had killer fantasy players. This is the NBA, not fantasy land.

Your takes have been so weak this year brotha, step your game up son!

Ben Wallace was the shit that year for Fantasy. 12 rpg/3 bpg/2 spg.

Another Bill Simmons shot at Blazer fans

For those who might have missed this little line:

Q: I was thinking about how ESPN has "ESPN New York" and "ESPN Boston" and then it crossed my mind: Why not have a few others such as "ESPN LeBron," "ESPN Favre" and "ESPN Tiger"?
-- Joe R., Summit

SG: Yes, I received this e-mail two months before we created the "Heat Index." We already have ESPN Tiger: It's called ESPN.com/golf. And we already have ESPN Favre: It's called ESPN. But I agree with Joe: The more special sections, the merrier. For instance ...

"ESPN Rip City" -- Wall-to-wall Blazers coverage delivered in the most ingratiating way possible for those soccer mom fanatics from Portland. No. Why don't people who hate the guy, or are bothered by what he says just ignore him? Not saying you are bored by it, Platypus. Just the amount of whining people do about this guy amazes me. I got annoyed and turned off by his writing about 2 or so years ago, I think. His general lack of basketball knowledge started to wear on me. And what did I do? I stopped reading. Now I don't hear the dumb takes any more. Works great.

Re: Another Bill Simmons shot at Blazer fans

discussing it would give him what he wants.

Re: Another Bill Simmons shot at Blazer fans

There is nothing to discuss. The man is a jokester, its all to make some $$$. His comment, outside of the soccer mom part, is pretty true.

Re: Another Bill Simmons shot at Blazer fans

He is right on every point he made in that article.

Actually, more than anything, I'm amused by the spot Blazer fans occupy in his world. And honestly, it makes me a little proud to be part of a group that is considered as rabid as any other.

I'll give you the Oden vs Durant comment... but I dont honestly believe there is one sane poster on this board who feels Wes was a bigger signing than Lebron. And that Roy is close to MJ. At least I hope not.

Re: Another Bill Simmons shot at Blazer fans

I refuse to merge

The guy went to literally ever Celtic game for 15 years while growing up, with 6th row seats, and he wrote a 700-page book solely about the NBA which is the most informative book on the NBA, at least in terms of knowledge, that I have read. While he may be a smarmy, acerbic writer, I think he knows more about the NBA, and its brand of basketball, than 99% of the posters on this board, myself included in that 99%.

Critique his writing style, but I can't take any criticism of Simmons' NBA basketball IQ seriously unless that poster is also ready to dissect and attack The Book of Basketball.

Read the book, and loved it. Don't like some of........errrrr....... a lot of his opinions, but he does know the game!

Yeah, in a book that big, or in columns he writes, the odds are that nobody will agree with him most, or even a little bit, of the time. That said, I knew a lot more about the NBA after reading that book than before I bought it, Simmons' opinions aside.
