People buying computers in South Carolina would be limited in their access to porn online under newly proposed legislation.

A bill pre-filed this month by state Rep. Bill Chumley would require sellers to install digital blocking capabilities on computers and other devices that access the internet to prevent the viewing of obscene content.

The proposal also would prohibit access to any online hub that facilities prostitution and would require manufacturers or sellers to block any websites that facilitate trafficking.

Aside from the stupidity and Constitutional questions, the bugaboo of all such bills has been defining porn.

One such definition was explicit images/descriptions of rape, sexual torture, child molestation, (maybe) AND menstruation and lactation. So the pamphlets the Girl Scouts distribute to little girls to explain menstruation, complete with anatomical diagrams, were porn. Another tried to define porn as full frontal images of genitalia. So ads for AIDS prevention showing how to put on a condom were porn (not to mention Michelangelo's David), but an image of a bound, naked woman covered with bruises, but her genitalia blocked by her leg, was not. Pictures of infants taking baths, which every parent takes, have been labeled child pornography.

You could try outlawing stupidity but I don't think that would pass.

Yay censorship! As if any of those guys never looked at porn.

Now they'll just have to go back to finding stimulation as altar boys again.

Off topic, but mention of gay porn reminded me, I once ordered a ballet video from a company, by mistake they sent a gay male porn video. I called them up to ask about return and the lady on the phone almost dropped dead from embarrassment, I could HEAR her blushing dark red. She just said don't have to return it, I'll credit and send correct, so sorry so sorry so sorry. It was pretty funny.

Gave the video to a gay male friend since it was not exactly my preferred genre.

I'm for this. Some studies have shown 12-17 year-olds are the largest consumers of online pornography, with 12 being the average age of first exposure. Pretty messed up, this isn't your dad's old playboys we are talking about here.

Parents can install blocking software, Hail Blazers, if they think kids are being harmed. What is the evidence for harm?
My dad did not read Playboy.

I read the title and thought...Bill who? Gates? Clinton?

You don't think there is harm in prepubescent exposure to hard-core pornography? Parents can't control their children's peers computers.

Parents can set parameters and communicate with the parents of the kids friends as well.....you can see so much gore without going to porno sites ..violence is all over the media...torture, rape, pedophilia...it's always there...best route in my opinion is to educate your prepubescent children and make them knowledgeable that this is out there. Netflix has a lot of uncensored film...kids adapt to things better than folks think. Isolating them from reality only lasts so long like the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus. If we start censoring media, internet, etc....we do what China does..most kids would find commercial porno boring and get more excited playing video games or watching comedy

In a perfect world I would agree. Unfortunately most parents don't communicate and its left up to kids to "google it." And that's how it starts, their are millions of kids addicted to this new drug now.

"The status of pornography addiction as an addictive disorder, rather than simply a compulsivity, has been hotly contested. The current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) includes a new section for behavioral addictions, but includes only one disorder: pathological gambling.[15] One other behavioral addiction, Internet gaming disorder, appears in the conditions proposed for further study in DSM-5.[15] Psychiatrists cited a lack of research support for refusing to include other behavioral disorders at this time,[15] however, an extensive 2015 review of the neuroscience/neuropsych studies on pornography users now calls for internet addiction to be included in the DSM with internet pornography addiction as a subtype." - Wikipedia

When I was 11 my mother and I were in New York for a family wedding and my mother took me to see The Owl and the Pussycat. Not hard core porn but definitely. sexy. And some of my relatives were scandalized but my mother said if I understand it I'm not learning anything new and if I don't I'm not harmed. The part I remember most was a very silly joke in which the woman (Barbra Streisand) insisted she could NOT commit suicide in either 1) slacks (she was going to die like a lady in a skirt) or torn undies. The kind of silliness that would appeal to an 11 year old. It was not until years later I read the play and realized the woman was a prostitute. They used code words like street walker and working girl and I probably figured she was a secretary who liked going for walks!

If someone, like Hail Blazers, wants to claim harm, they have the job of showing evidence. There really is no evidence that viewing porn leads to rape, for example. Or that viewing porn leads to sex at an early age, more the reverse, they view porn because they are interested in sex (which is after all a normal biological function and not evil).

And yet again, please, a working definition of porn? Is Michelangelo's David porn? Are AIDS prevention ads porn? Was Brokeback Mountain porn?

As someone who's raised children and been a teacher and parent most of my adult life...I haven't seen evidence of it...I have seen evidence of it from middle aged men though and that does pose a problem....and is where most criminal sexual behavior seems to stem from most often

I think there's an element of internet fear in society these days...erotica, porn, all the subgenres have been around forever....when I was young we had magazines that perked our curiosity ...I never felt it negatively impacted me or the kids I grew up around..I've read that repression is a huge cause in sexual misbehavior..the unknown becomes fantasy....the known....just bobbles and fluids.....I'm not a fan of any pedophilia in erotica at all by choice or any violent sexual behavior for the same reason.....first exposed breast I saw on film was Romeo and Juliet with Olivia Hussey as Juliet...

Thanks for all your years of teaching Mr. Riverman, truly the most underappreciated job (outside of being a mother). However what we have today is new, instant access to hardcore porn in our pockets 24/7. I'm sorry but their is no comparison.

@crandc Porn is addictive, addictions cause harm. It's pretty black and white. Here's a study for you:

This current study analyzes the content of popular pornographic videos, with the objectives of updating depictions of aggression, degradation, and sexual practices and comparing the study’s results to previous content analysis studies. Findings indicate high levels of aggression in pornography in both verbal and physical forms. Of the 304 scenes analyzed, 88.2% contained physical aggression, principally spanking, gagging, and slapping, while 48.7% of scenes contained verbal aggression, primarily name-calling. Perpetrators of aggression were usually male, whereas targets of aggression were overwhelmingly female. Targets most often showed pleasure or responded neutrally to the aggression.

I actually think violence is even a bigger problem, yet it is so accepted in popular culture...some might say it's an even bigger addiction...I do not however condone unhealthy environments for child development and I'm sure there are far too many victims of really unnecessary exposure to things they don't need around their lives

Brokeback Mountain is what is wrong with this country.......

Not that it was about gay cowboys but that everyone had to make a big deal over it before I saw it. Hello America, spoiler alert please. They completely ruined the movie, I had no way of knowing what my reaction would have been if I didn't know because I did know. Assholes....no pun intended.

I thought Brokeback Mountain was a pretty good movie.

Here's what is hilarious. Republicans tout themselves as party of small government. Government interference in business is bad. Really bad. All those regulations need to go.
Minimum wage: terrible
Overtime pay: terrible
Lunch break: terrible
Sick leave: terrible
Anti-discrimination laws: really terrible
Health and safety laws: terrible
Animal welfare laws: terrible
Environmental regulations: most terrible

But dictating to computer manufacturers what software they must install, even if computer will never be used by a child? Great!
Oklahoma passed a law requiring businesses to post, and pay for, anti-abortion messages in women's restrooms. Fabulous! (no, they do not require "use a condom" messages in the men's room)
North Carolina ordering businesses to dictate what restroom people can use? Terrific (until it cost the state millions of dollars)
Demanding businesses use a specifically Christian rather than generic holiday message? Wonderful!

And don't even get me started on the hundreds and hundreds of new laws regulating women's bodies. Government small enough to fit into a uterus.

I thought it was decent but people ruined it by telling everyone about it before we saw it. My friends told me the ending of Seven and what was in the box before I saw that too.

Seven was still great but damn.

As to Republicans, the Democrats have been lucky all these years because the Republicans DO stupid shit that turns people off half of the time. We're tired of it and maybe they'll figure it out soon.

I forget which idiotic state it is that is going to put anti abortion messages in restrooms but it is just moronic.

I saw Seven in theaters. My friends went the first weekend and I had a date with a girl so I couldn't go. Good trade for any movie.

Brokeback everyone talked about instantly. I don't see movies at the theater now, my house is better.Bluray and DVDexpress for the win

Fappy should replace Blaze and the Blazer mascot.

Too late. Blaze has been replaced by Gary The No D Cougar.
