When Batum was drafted, the entire Blazer organization thought he was going to need more seasoning in Europe. When Babbitt was drafted, we traded a servicable wing player for him, and heard from some that the Blazer envisioned him in the rotation. So yes, I expected more at this point.

Yes and we have just acquired a "more serviceable" wing in matthews who can play the 2/3, Webs was awful as a 3. We have batum as our 3 so Webster was clearly expendable, what's so difficult to understand about this?

So you're saying Matthews and Babbitt is better than Matthews, Webster and 3 million dollars? Is that right? Is that really what you are saying? Because signing Matthews has absolutely nothing to do with Webster for Babbitt.

For an owner that seemingly wants to win now, that makes no sense.

I have to agree. The only thing that I can think of is that Martell quietly asked to be traded because he wanted a starting role somewhere else and the Blazers consented.

Maybe - but who knows if Wes was willing to sign if Webster was still on the roster... I am sure the big money offer is important - but he might not have signed the contract if he thought he would be buried on the bench getting splinters as well.

The fact is, it was a very good value for Webster's services - imho - what we have seen from Webster was that he was never worth the high pick he was taken with - he was basically a late-lottery/mid-1st round kind of value - and it was clear that he was about as good as he was going to get in Portland - so trading him, opening minutes for a free-agent and getting a prospect for him - was probably a good risk.
