Blazers contact FCC in regards to Comcast deal

The Portland Trail Blazers’ dispute with Comcast SportsNet Northwest has reached Washington, D.C.

The Blazers filed a letter June 21 with the Federal Communications Commission, asking the government agency to allow the team’s basketball games to be broadcast on television in Oregon and Washington by distributors other than CSN, The Columbian has learned.

Hopefully it lights a fire under Comcast, but I'm not holding my breath.

The Blazers’ request was submitted as part of an official comment during an ongoing approval period, as the FCC reviews a proposed merger between Comcast, General Electric Company, and NBC Universal.

A decision by the FCC about the merger — which would combine all three corporations into a new joint venture called NBCU — is not expected until late 2010 at the earliest. But if the merger and Portland’s request are approved, it would finally provide the Blazers with the opportunity to utilize other networks to distribute the team’s games.

Well, it's a good thing Brian T. Smith writes for the sports section and not the business section, because he got the stuff about the merger completely wrong.

GE owns 80% of NBC at present. The proposal is that Comcast will contribute some programming assets to NBC, GE will receive some cash, and as a result, NBC will be owned 51% by Comcast and 49% by GE.

Comcast and GE are not merging with NBC or with each other. What it really amounts to is Comcast buying NBC from GE.

I didn't say he sucks, ever. I said he isn't worth the full MLE. Reading is fundamental; perhaps you need a refresher course. Kobe had arguably his best playoff series since Shaq left with "stopper" Wesley Matthews trying to defend him. It was a post in response to a poster who compared Matthews to Bruce Bowen, or even Raja Bell, in terms of defense.

Now THAT is fucking funny.
