"The Portland Trail Blazers need help at center with all their injuries and Bob Cooney of the Philadelphia Daily News reports Marreese Speights is one of their targets.

Reportedly the 76ers were offered Dante Cunningham, who played at Villanova, and a second-round draft pick, but Philadelphia doesn't seem to be interested in that offer.

Portland is actually starting the 6-7 Cunningham at center because Greg Oden is out for the year, Marcus Camby is sidelined after left knee surgery and Joel Przybilla is not playing well since he came back from two surgeries to his knee.

Even though general manager Rich Cho has made only one minor deal so far -- Jerryd Bayless to New Orleans for a first round pick -- many around the league say the Blazers are very active in trade discussions and they are expected to make a move by next Thursday's trade deadline.

Przybilla, Camby and Andre Miller are the likeliest to be dealt, if Cho does make a trade."

Speights would be NICE. 17 PER, 18pts 9rebs 1blk per 36 minutes, 6-10 245lbs, 23 years old. He plays less than his first 2 years so they might not like him so much.

Pryz+Dante for Speights+Nocioni works.
They shed 500K this year, and essentially trade Nocioni's 2 years @7M for Pryz's half year deal.

They don't have many bad contracts besides Brand, but I would be willing sweeten the pot with fringe players on small salaries, and taking back longer contracts they don't want.

It's the type of move I'd love to see. GET IT DONE, Cho.

Speights was supposed to break out this year, but he has been hindered by a lack of PT and poor effort. Collins doesn't really like him that much.

Not a bad idea. I'd give up that NO pick to get him: he's got talent. And size.

Tell you this much, he sure seems a safer bet than Anthony Randolph.

Btw, Speights for Dante straight up is off by 700K (1M difference in salaries). So that undermines the credibility of the report somewhat.

Speights would be a nice pick up for sure, but if that is indicative of the offers we are sending teams, then expect no trades to happen

That's not a very good offer, but maybe the pot will be sweetened ... with what? Ummm ... I have no idea what the Blazers can do to make that deal better without completely losing the deal; the crap they have to offer isn't very appealing.

How bout one of the 1st rdrs? IMO Speights is still young and has proven he can play at this level, in this lousy draft I don't think we can do any better and then it's another rookie which of course takes a lot of time.

Speights is one of those average PER/ridiculous Usage players.

15 PER/22.5 USG. If he learns to play without the ball, maybe, but since he hasn't proven that he can...

no thanks.

Dealing with Rod Thorn is a waste of time. That guy won't make a trade unless is ridiculously favors him.

Then he'll whine to the media about how the other GM is an idiot. Remember the Vince Carter BS? What was the supposed deal. VC and 3 first-round picks for RLEC.

Yeah, riiggghhhhtt. That was possible.

We take Speights for our TPE. Then send them Dante and a 2nd for a TPE.

Speights is a horrible defender. Be careful what you ask for based upon PER.

This is great....

From devin Harris to speights and sessions. It's like being offered fine dining and then finding out it's taco bell.

Overstated. Sessions may not be an ex-all-star, but he's pretty good, actually a pure point guard, and not injury prone. He'd probably meet our needs nearly as well as Harris would, and be more reliable.

I actually suggested Speights a few days ago, saying I've never seen him play but that his per-minute numbers are very good.
With that said, I wouldn't trade Dante for him. I would consider offering Babbitt but not Dante.

I think we should offer Rudy for Speights. What do you think, Blazer4now? :devilwink:

I'm a Blazer4ever but I'm no loser and will not be a fan of a loser-team.

Speights isn't even on the Phillies depth chart, and they've had him 2 and a half years now.

His next team will end up waiving himm and he'll be out of the league.

He has better size than I expected, via Chad Ford:

He also measured out very well. He was 6-foot-9¾ in socks and 6-foot-11 in shoes. He has very long arms that allow him to play even larger than he is. He also showed very good leaping ability and showed good lateral quickness for a big man.

Second, Speights is a much better shooter than advertised. He has excellent touch from midrange, and during one drill, shot roughly 50 percent from NBA 3-point range around the arc. His form is solid and his release smooth. While no one will draft Speights to shoot NBA 3s, he definitely can face the basket.

Unlike Alexander, Speight's shooting touch didn't leave him when he went to playing 3-on-3. He was guarded by Alexander and scored at will with a series of step-backs, midrange jumpers off the dribble and post-up spins and moves. His strength and length were just too much.

Finally, Speights showed excellent aggressiveness as a defender. He showed an ability to guard Alexander out on the perimeter and down low. Moving his feet and using his length, he kept Alexander from getting clean looks at the basket.

I think you're trying to have it both ways. Either you're 'Blazer4ever' no matter what or you need to pick a new handle. Sorry, but it's only right.

Speights intrigues me. Last year he showed glimpses of breaking out and becoming a solid player. I think I like him as a prospect better than A. Randolph.

wonder if we could do a trade where we get him but dont really nessicarily have to give up cunningham. i like cunningham but ill give him up if we have to.
