Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

Would be so classless of the organization.

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

Are his injuries that bad?

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

He still seems to think he's a star. I doubt he'll retire. Most athletes like him spend a few years embarrassing themselves before giving up.

He has good games every once in a blue moon, but since he returned, the Blazers went back to their slow, plodding half court offense.

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

They "might" ask him. Wow, they "might" do a lot of things or the "might" not.

Agreed.

They will use the Amnesty clause in the new CBA if they can to be rid of his contract.

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

For a player to retire doesn't that means he waives the last years of his contract?

No way in hell is he going to do that.

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

in other news, my wife asked me to do the dishes last night, i said no

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

basically trying to illustrate the obvious...we can ask all we want, not gonna make a difference

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

I assume they mean medically retire. Bone on bone is a degenerative condition.

Roy is trying some sort of plasma therapy all summer and hopes to be back playing. I think talking him into retiring under a medical condition will not succeed. If so, and if we have an Amnesty clause in the new CBA, we will have to use it if we want to have salary space to build a better team. If not and we keep Roy's salary, then we greatly limit our ability to construct a team that can contend.

With two bad knees, he is still the only player on the roster who can consistently create his own shot, or offense for others, in the playoffs. Hopefully the plasma treatment alleviates some of the pain.

He's done the plasma treatment before on his hamstring a few years ago and most recently when he had both knees "cleaned out" this season. It appears effective for temporary relief, but the lasting effects are likely little once the wear and tear of several weeks to a few months take their toll on his bone on bone knees. The key is do we want a role player who earns a huge salary who so far has had a difficult adjustment to coming off the bench? And a players whose knees will very lilely only worsen over time. realistically i think Roy gets another season to realize how bad his knees are, but if an amnesty clause comes with the new CBA I think POR uses it.

Note that IMO this idea of the team perhaps "asking" Roy to retire IMO is another clusterfuk by mgmt if true. I do not think Roy is at all ready to do that, I think it takes one more season of bad knees and bad play to do that.

Maybe we're talking semantics, but I don't think he can consistently create his own shot anymore. He's smart enough to get open without the ball, but his quickness, explosiveness and jumping ability have been reduced at least 50%.

I would agree with this. It's hard for a top tier athlete to fully understand he can no longer play.

Especially when he outplayed the guy starting in front of him in the playoffs.

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

i dont think he will care if his play falls off, he will likely only consider it if the pain becomes unbearable

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

If Roy has any integrity, he WILL retire. There is no way he can justify the salary he is getting, when he is making such a little contribution to the team. Portland has paid him very well, and he can live comfortably for the rest of his life. Go in peace, Brandon.

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

For the entire series.

Again with this bullshit, he outperformed Matthews for ONE GAME, and it was a great one, but Matthews played better for the rest of the series, and the stats prove that

He won't retire. Canzano is a dick about a lot of things, but he is right that POR trying to "convince" Roy to medically retire is asinine. At this point if you are POR you have to hope that the amnesty allows you to clear the players' salary off your cap and not just the luxury tax implications.

The problem with Roy just isn't his salary in relation to his now spotty performance. Even if POR wanted to hamstring itself and keep Roy and use him as a "super-sub\4th quarter closer" the problem is that 1) He still views himself as a starter, 2) He still views himself as a the focal point of the team's offense & 3) He cannot consistently deliver in that role anyway. Is ONE out of every 4 or 5 games acceptible for a guy you are paying $14, $15, $18 million to over the next what 4? 5? years?

Not if you plan on actually building towards winning a championship it isn't......

The hard part for POR is going to be, cutting him loose and then watching as another playoff team picks him up and uses him in EXACTLY that type of role and he will likely hang on for a couple more years (maybe even through his contract). I think Roy would probably accept that type of role on another team, but he won't on POR.

Time to just bite the bullet and get this shit over with, rather than prolong this mess. Hope for the amnesty to clear his salary off the books as well, but even if it doesn't use it on him and move on, better for everyone involved. The longer he stays the more ugly this becomes IMO. But trying to coerce him into retiring is a foolish endeavor by POR mgmt (whatever is left of it).

the "asking" part is dumb if the Blazers have or will do it, either the doc's recommend it and then Roy eventually agrees or POR uses a new amnesty clause to get rid of his huge contract.

That's why we shouldn't ask him to retire. We should just use any amnesty clause there may be and let him go.
