I'm cool with that. Howard is WAY past his prime, but he's a big body with a pulse and a TON of NBA exerience. By all accounts, he's a great locker room guy and will be a good mentor for our young guys. With Penderegraph out indefinitely, it's also cheap insurance in a 3rd string big.

Great pic up. On and off the court. The only thing that sucks, is this is messin with us being the youngest team!

Oh wow, i just realized today was the day you guys were going to do that, i'm sorry :dunno:

I knew something was up when he canceled at the last minute. I thought it was because they had finally come to terms with LMA. Tom Penn could have handled this, lol.

I think this is a solid pickup. Howard is a decent backup at this point in his career. He's not going to screw up when given minutes, and he's a veteran presence in the locker room. I don't think he really drastically improves this team or anything, but he's good insurance if one of the bigs goes down.

Hey NateBishop - Guess I did see Juwan Howard at the airport last night, eh? Maybe I heard something about Oden's knee too...

OOOOOO SNAP! We have a battle between our 2 "insiders"!

Other than the ability to say "we are the youngest team in the league" the only benefit of actually being the youngest team is you still have room for improvement. Our core is still the youngest (and the most talented) and adding savy veterans like Andre Miller and Juwan Howard will just help accelarate the improvement of our young core.

So, while adding Miller and Howard makes our roster older, it will help make our young guys better sooner. Also, getting them at reasonable salaries on short term deals will make it easy to replace them with other cheap, servicable vets when they get too old to contribute.

Howard is basically our 13th or 14th man, 3rd or 4th on the depth chart at the 4 and 5. Given that we've already signed both our young second round picks (and one of them is out indefinitely with a hip injury) and Joel Freeland has re-signed oversees, I don't really see anyone else I'd rather have in Howard's place.

God, I'm SO glad I'm not a Memhis Grizzlies fan. Look who they brought in as veterans to guide their young franchise - an extremely overpaid Zach Randolph (who STILL has OVER $33 million left on the contract he signed here in Portland) and Allen Iverson - two of the most selfish, disruptive players in the league who will take playing time away from their young players and hinder their growth on and off the court.

I love this!!! Great signing IMO.

Howard (6-9, 250, Michigan) holds career averages of 14.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 1,043 games (871 starts) over a 15-year NBA career with Washington, Dallas, Denver, Orlando, Houston and Charlotte.

I didn't know his stats were that good for his career!!! Nice! I really, really like this deal.

With Miller and Howard signing, I think this opens the door for future NBA veterans to want to come to Portland! Not Kemp type players. Real, decent vets that have had good careers.

We could still have a Kemp on the team. I think he has 7 or 8 kids entering the draft in the next few years.

They'd be even better if he hadn't played the last two years.

The hardest part of this for me is that I'm going to have to stop calling him JoAnne now that he's in a Blazers uniform.

Good pickup. He will get time here this year.

Always seemed a bit soft to me. Hope he proves me wrong this year.

I think he will. He is going to help LMA develop so much. That is the most value to me. Between he and Miller, watch LMA be an All-Star this year.

I can't understand why we didn't (i'm guessing) go after a serviceable player like Joe Smith, instead. Howard is done. I doubt he'll even get the minutes Ruffin or ShavBo did last year.

I'm starting to think that may be the EXACT reason we didn't go for Joe Smith. Smith probably wouldn't be happy with that limited of minutes. While Howard may be called upon in case of injury, foul trouble or garbage minutes, I really think he has been brought in as mentor/coach for the younger guys rather than his on-court abilities.
