Hockey would more than likely take business away from the Blazers. Same time of year and all that.

Baseball would flourish in Portland IMO. Having moved away to Houston where there is MLB it is a beautiful thing to wake up on Saturday or Sunday morning and realize that most of the time you can say "Wow, the Cubs are in town, I'd like to see them play" Then go and sit in the bleachers for $4 and eat nachos and drink beer.

If Portland had the right owner and the right size stadium it would be awesom to catch a game in the beautiful Portland summer
 
if we built a baseball stadium, there is no doubt someone would move here imo.

a smaller stadium like 35-40k would be sweet, somewhere were there isnt a bad seat. it would sell out for years as long as we had a decent team, and they players played with effort.
 
I'd go watch baseball for sure, hockey... eh not so much.
 
The NHL figured that hockey would do better in the south:

Tampa Bay, 19th in attendance
Florida, 23rd
Carolina, 24th
Atlanta, 27th
Nashville, 28th

i'd love any kind of pro team besides the blazers. i'm not a fan of NHL but i'd support the team and goto games and probably start following. i probably wouldnt change teams in any other sport(i really want NFL) but i'd still go and support the team aslong as they aren't playing my favorite team.

Any decision made by the NHL is usually in err.


Also, attendance should be ranked by % of seats sold, not total seats. It skews the numbers towards the bigger arenas. % puts Portland into 2nd.
 
Just get Uncle Paul to buy us another team..I'd love baseball or football here..and I would immediately hop on the Portland bandwagon for both sports as my fv teams.
 
There is NO WAY baseball would survive here. There aren't enough people to adequately support the team 81 times a year to generate the revenues needed to field a competitive product. MLS and the NFL could make it though.
 
I'm not a big hockey fan but Paul should have bought the Penguins when he had the chance. Going to be a great team. 3 great young players..
 
Isn't there talk of them getting a MLS team in the future? Like 2011?

I'm not a huge fan of the MLS (occasionally watch World Cup), NHL or the MLB. I wouldn't mind catching a game or two throughout the season though.

Now if we got a NFL team, I'd definitely go to the games

Hell I'd even catch a Nascar race (they used to talk about putting a race in Troutdale, I believe.)

There are easily 15-20 thousand people in the Portland area who would get season tickets.

Here in Houston my company has 1st row seats behind the third base dugout. Those seats are $45 each. That is also for a team that was just in the world series a couple of years ago.

The average cost of a ticket is $20. That's only $1600 for 81 nights of entertainment.

I think a lot of people would do that. Plus the game by game fans.


MLS isn't even one of the major sports. Who cares if they got a team?

I think baseball would work in Ptd . . . especially because, in this small market city with not many people, the basketball teams draws more attendance than most other NBA teams including the LA, NY, and Dallas.

For not enough people, Ptd fans kick ass in attendance.
 
If places like St. Louis, Kansas City, Milwaukee and even Cincinnati can support more than one pro team, why can't Portland? It's honestly insulting we have the same number of teams as Utah and OKC.
 
baseball would work for SURE!!! corporations would buy all the season tickets the first day. i always thought that would be so cool to have a baseball team in portland, i would move back immediately.
 
If we had baseball, I would totally buy ticket packages (not season but a lot)
How awesome would it be to get a weekend series in July?

What corporations in Portland? Nike and maybe Intel? It's sad that Portland only has the HQ for one Fortune 500 company yet Boise, Idaho sports more than 20.
 
The economics of Baseball are screwed beyond measure. Why would you support a team in Portland when you know at the beginning of the season that they have no shot at winning the World Series? Until MLB puts their financial house in order, I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot bat.

The state of Idaho actually only has 2-3 fortune 500 companies depending on what year you look at. But your main point is correct. Portland has almost zero crporate backing for a city of its size. The Denver Metro area (onlya couple hundred thousand bigger than than Portland) has 8 or 9 and a total of 12 in the state. Portland in general is a different cat than most other major metropolitan cities in that it has not made a large effort to attract big business. If anything the city has driven them away. Also Portland has a lot more outdoor activities that occupy a lot of people.Still there is no question that the Portland Area has the population to support another pro franchise.

Haha I think you have it all wrong. You have teams like Florida Marlins, Colorado Rockies and Devil Rays in the World Series and the Twins being a perennial playoff team despite having one of the lowest payroll's in baseball year in and year out. While the Yankees have been exiting the playoffs early every year for years. MLB has proven that having a big payroll isn't a prerequisite for winning.
 
I wouldn't be interested in NHL at all, but would problably go to MLB. I love playing baseball, but not a big fan of watcihng it. I would go to see teams like the Braves, Reds and so forth.

I would love to see us get a NFL team!

You have the indoor professional lacrosse team (JAX) with only 8 home games. Their attendance is much better than the whl.ca winterhawks.

2007 7,527 spectators per game with a 4-12 record
2008 8,104 per game (ninth in the league) despite a 6-10 regular season was a good sign for the franchise....

All those stats much better than the www.winterhawks.com who currently have a 12-25 record with 15-21 year olds, and 3 years of sub .250 winning percentage.

Until the city and owner Merrit of the Portland Timbers come to an agreement on how to convert PGE park into a soccer or college football facility with funds it will be at least 1-2 years for MLS to come here. MLS has fewer games than MLB baseball but this city isn't ready to move up a level when we can't even support our minor league Beavers with 3000 spectators every day.

Well, ehizzy3 you can still enjoy looking at the lacrosse dancers since they are pretty much the same ones for Blazer games.

Taxing and gouging all business out of the state, and then putting ridiculous restrictions on production, yield this result. Also remember that Nike is in Beaverton, and that Nike gets tax breaks to stay in Beaverton. When Washington County threatened to rip away this tax protection, Phil Knight was ready to move the entire company.
 
I have literally zero interest in MLS, and I watch Premier League soccer at times on FoxSportsSoccer.

I'd probably go to a "Thirsty Thursday" game if they still were offered, but that would be about it.
