Del Potro wins in return to BNP Paribas Open

Novak Djokovic will be playing for his third consecutive BNP Paribas Open title this year. He has won 12 consecutive matches here, dating back to 2013, and has defeated Andy Murray and Roger Federer twice during that streak.

The last player to defeat Djokovic at Indian Wells? Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro.

If that name is not familiar, it’s because Del Potro has not played here since. He defeated Djokovic three years ago, before ultimately losing to Rafael Nadal in the final. He did not make the trip to Indian Wells each of the last two years due multiple wrist injuries. He had four surgeries on his wrists in five years, the most recent one keeping the 27-year-old out for the last 11 months.

Del Potro, currently ranked No. 420 in the Association of Tennis Professionals world rankings, made his return to the sport last month, winning three of four matches at the Delray Beach Open in Florida. Thursday night he made his return to Indian Wells, defeating American Tim Smyczek in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.

Taylor Fritz is upset about losing to friend Frances Tiafoe at BNP Paribas Open

Frances Tiafoe took a wise approach to his first-round match against fellow American Taylor Fritz on Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open. "You never make the moment as big as it seems. You treat it like another match," Tiafoe said. "We play in Carson, where we train, all the time. I thought it would be just like that.

"Obviously, it's Indian Wells and you're playing on the second-biggest court in tennis, but you just want to stay in between the lines and just go from point to point."

Tiafoe of College Park, Md., wasn't intimidated by the event or by playing in 16,100-seat Stadium 1. Tiafoe, the youngest player in the men's draw here at 18 years and 1 month old— three months younger than Fritz — kept his friend off balance and overcame a second-set lull to prevail, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Andy Murray adapts and advances at BNP Paribas Open

THe BNP Paribas Open has never been kind to Andy Murray. The best result the world's No. 2 tennis player has achieved at Indian Wells was being the runner-up to Rafael Nadal in 2009, which he followed with a quarterfinal exit in 2010 and back-to-back opening-round losses before he made it back to the semifinals a year ago, where he lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Whether that will change will be determined in the next week. But on Saturday, at least, he showed that on the court — as in his life — he's capable of adapting to change.

Fending off variable winds on the Stadium 1 court, Murray defeated Spaniard Marcel Granollers, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in a second-round match. By the end they were matching each other grunt for grunt, but Murray prevailed the way he so often does: with patience, speed, and great tactics. And his newfound adaptability.

Belinda Bencic is latest upset victim at BNP Paribas Open

Belinda Bencic of Switzerland on Monday became the fifth of the top 10 women's seeds to lose early at the BNP Paribas Open, echoing the fluctuation in the world rankings after No. 1 Serena Williams.

Bencic, ranked No. 8 and seeded seventh here, was victimized by her erratic serve and the forehand slices of world No. 97 Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia, who prevailed, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, at Stadium 2 to advance to the round of 16.

Johanna Konta graceful in defeat at BNP Paribas Open after world

JOHANNA KONTA'S pride was feeling a little bruised after her three set loss to Karolina Pliskova at the BNP Paribas Open but deep down she knew it had been a good week in the Californian desert.

By reaching the fourth round in Indian Wells, she had pushed her world ranking up a few notches to No.23 and even if she refuses to judge her professional career and her personal happiness by such mundane milestones as rankings and titles - it is all about performance on the day - she knew she had fought well and fought hard against the Czech. That made the 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 defeat bearable and easier to digest.

"I left it all out there, so right now I am feeling a little disappointed, a little bruised, but all good; I fought my best," she said. "So winning or losing, I'm happy with how I competed out there."

The former world No 1 moved into the quarter-finals at Indian Wells

Rafael Nadal fought off match point before hitting back to beat rising star Alexander Zverev and book his place in the BNP Paribas Open quarter-finals.

The former world No 1 was staring defeat in the face when the German approached the net with the score 40-30 at 5-4 in the deciding set.

But Zverev put a simple volley into the net, Nadal went on to break and then win the final two games, winning 15 of the last 16 points, to claim a 6-7 (10/8), 6-0, 7-5 victory.

Karolina Pliskova wins in singles and doubles at BNP Paribas Open

Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic was late for a news conference to discuss her 6-3, 6-2 quarterfinal victory over Russian teenager Daria Kasatkina on Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open. But her tardiness was understandable: Pliskova was preparing for a doubles semifinal match, in which she teamed with Julia Goerges of Germany to defeat Sara Errani of Italy and Oksana Kalashnikova of Georgia, 6-4, 6-3.
