Serena Williams is settling right on into the BNP Paribas Open, producing a quick, business-like effort in advancing to the fourth round Sunday while enjoying her return after a 14-year absence.
She defeated up-and-comer Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan 6-2, 6-0 in 53 minutes, a routine affair compared to the emotional roller coaster she rode Friday night after walking onto stadium court for the first time since being driven away by a hail of boos as a teenager in 2001.
Four-time Indian Wells winner Roger Federer needed just 63 minutes to dispatch Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 6-2 in the men's second round. Federer hit a 122 mph ace to set up match point and blasted a forehand winner to end it, leaving him two shy of 50 career wins in the desert.
"I'm moving well, which is key on this surface because the easy shots and easy points are not going to happen so easily here like they maybe do in Dubai or Australia or the indoor season," Federer said. "I was successful playing on my terms. There are certain things I can do better, but for a first round it's a good start."
Nick Kyrgios of Australia says he will be out at least two to four weeks with a foot injury.

Struggling with her serve and a rash of errors, Serena Williams overcame a slow start to beat Sloane Stephens 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2 in the fourth round at the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday, extending her winning streak to 14 matches.
Maria Sharapova struggled mightily, too, losing 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to defending champion Flavia Pennetta, who won her ninth straight match after becoming emotional and leaving the court in the first set.
Four-time Indian Wells champion Roger Federer defeated Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4 at the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday, avenging his third-round loss to Seppi at the Australian Open.
- Novak Djokovic defeated Andy Murray 6-2, 6-3 to reach the final of the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday, handing Murray his worst hard-court loss against the world's top-ranked player since 2007.
Djokovic will play for his fourth career title in the desert in Sunday's final against four-time champion Roger Federer, who beat sixth-seeded Milos Raonic 7-5, 6-4 in the other semifinal.
Federer needed two minutes more than Djokovic to beat Raonic. He earned the only break of the first set in the 11th game, winning on his third break point when Raonic's backhand missed wide.
Federer served a love game to take the set 7-5 then broke Raonic on a backhand down the line to open the second set.
Move over Roger Federer, there is another guy with a share of your crown as king of the desert.
