In a game with huge playoff implications, Booker Woodfox drained a baseline jumper to break a tied game with 6.4 seconds left to help defeat the Austin Toros 97-93 on Friday night at HP Court inside Dr Pepper Arena.
The win evened the Legends up with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants for the eighth and final playoff spot, while giving them a one-game lead over the Toros heading into the second of the back-to-back games tomorrow night in Frisco.
Justin Dentmon started the game on fire scoring 13 points in the opening quarter. The Legends led by as many as nine points in the first and took a six-point lead into the second quarter.
With Texas on top 41-33 early in the second, Austin scored nine unanswered points to take a one-point lead of their own. The Legends though finished the half on a 6-0 run over the final 1:47 to take a 57-48 lead into the break.
Dentmon finished the half with 18 points, while Matt Rogers added 11 for Texas. In his first game since being acquired by Austin, Tre Kelley led the way for the Toros in the opening half with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
After Texas scored the first three points of the second half to take a 12-point lead, Austin went on a 14-3 sprint to cut the deficit to one and went into the final period down 73-71.
The Toros scored the first six points in the fourth quarter to take a 77-73 lead, their first lead since the middle of the second quarter. However, Texas came right back to tie the game at 82 with under seven minutes to go.
With the game tied at 93, Kelly drove strong to the hoop, but had his lay up attempt swatted away by Legends newcomer Chris Roberts with 13.6 seconds left in the fourth.
On the offensive end, Woodfox came up huge, nailing a baseline jumper with 6.4 seconds left to give Texas the 95-93 lead.
With a chance for Austin to tie or win the game, Roberts came up with another huge defensive play. As Leo Lyons drove to the hoop, Roberts stepped in front, set his feet and drew the offensive foul on Lyons preserving the Legends victory.
Dentmon led the way for Texas with 25 points, as Rogers finished with 16 on the night.
Kelly was the leading scorer for Austin in a losing cause with 16 points.
The win improved the Legends to 19-23 on the season, while the Toros fell to 17-23.
Texas will play the second of back-to-back games against the Austin Toros tomorrow night at HP Court inside Dr Pepper Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM, with the game airing on tape delay nationally on VERSUS at 10:30 PM.
