NEW ORLEANS – BP says oil from its broken well has stopped gushing into the Gulf of Mexico for the first time since April.

The announcement Thursday came after company officials said all valves had been shut on a new cap over the busted well in an experiment to stop the spill.

Kent Wells, a BP PLC vice president, said at a news briefing that oil stopped flowing into the water at 2:25 p.m. CDT.

It was a long-awaited milestone in one of the nation's worst environmental disasters. While not a permanent solution to plug the busted well, the success in capturing the oil spewing out was welcome news.

The crisis began when BP's deepwater rig exploded, killing 11 workers.

The cap is not a permanent fix. BP is drilling two relief wells so it can pump mud and cement into the leaking well in hopes of plugging it for good.

Watch the Obama's administration take credit for stopping the oil well...I give it less than 48 hours. They will claim his "leadership" throughout the crisis helped "hold BP accountable".

Been watching CNN during the whole 'fix'. I guarantee another issue will pop-up along the way. Supposedly they will have to open the valves again but I wasn't playing attention.

They still think there is a leak somewhere along the line as the pressure within the pipes are still way below the norm.

Yeah, something will happen. I have some friends who are executives at some large oil and gas companies. They said the only sure fire way to stop the leak 100% was to drill a relief well. So even if this "fix" works it won't be 100% fixed until the relief wells are finished being dug.

What happened with the 'blow it up' theory? I assume there was too much risk involved.

Thats the option of absolutely last resort. All the industry experts think the relief well will work. If that doesn't work, then blow it up will be the last option.
