Sources close to WFNY have informed us that Tom Izzo has told his players at Michigan State that he plans on taking the Cavaliers job. Our sources have heard directly from players on the MSU team that Izzo informed them this week that he is planning on making the move up to the NBA level under the ownership of MSU grad Dan Gilbert. We have also heard from a separate source that Izzo is holding off on announcing this until the end of the week, when his kids finish up school in the Lansing area. While Izzo could always change his mind, we are comfortable reporting that he has in fact informed his players at Michigan State that he will be taking the Cavaliers job.

More details as we get them.

Update from Rick: We have three separate confirmations. Nobody at WFNY expects Izzo to announce a press conference immediately in response to this. He has his timing. We will stand by the story and wait it out.

I can't imagine he would take that job without some kind of assurance that LeBron is staying. He'd be nuts to leave MSU if LeBron is going somewhere else.

LeBron must be staying. I wonder how much Oregon offered izzo?

I agree...which makes me wonder if the "assurance" is that James picked Izzo as the coach (or one of the coaches) he'd want to stay and play for.

Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo called former Spartans coach Jud Heathcote Monday night to talk about the possible head-coaching job offer from the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Detroit News reported.

Heathcote said Izzo won't take the job without some confirmation from LeBron James(notes) that he's staying put instead of heading elsewhere in free agency.

"I honestly think he'll look at this," Heathcote told the paper. "But unless he can get some commitment from LeBron James, the job isn't that good. I think a lot hinges on what (Izzo) feels about LeBron's future. I think he's seriously considering it. He's going to look at it like he does on all things but he's got an awfully good situation at Michigan State, too."

The call lasted a half hour, according to the News. Izzo makes about $3 million annually from Michigan State.

This would likely mean LeBron is staying in Cleveland if Izzo has agreed to be the Cavs next head coach. Cavs have a rookie GM and a rookie NBA head coach.
