General manager
In short: This GM says the Blazers are legit, due in large part to their wing defense and versatile offense.
"Portland is for real. When you talk about teams that can win the West, they're in the conversation. The reason why is because they can guard wings with Matthews and Batum, and then they have some offense off the bench. They can beat you playing small and beat you playing big.
Assistant coach No. 1
In short: Could Portland's lack of bench depth be an issue and prevent a playoff run? This assistant thinks so, though he does like Portland's starting squad and coach.
"The only reason I would say they're not a legitimate threat to win the West is because of their bench. I think they're an injury away from having some problems. If they have an injury to any of their starters, they don't have anyone they can plug in.
Assistant coach No. 2
In short: This assistant says the Blazers' mix of top talent, great coaching and toughness makes them legit.
"The Blazers are for real. I always use the Pat Riley rule. Every year he would evaluate the team and the league after 20 games because typically over your first 10 games there's a bad team that plays good or a good team that struggles. But after 20 games things start evening out, and we're coming up on 20 right now.
Assistant coach No. 3
In short: This assistant says that the emergence of a rim protector has elevated the Blazers. But is it too early to group them with the West's other elite teams?
"They're for real. Yes, very much so. Here's why: The Blazers' 2s and 3s can really shoot the ball and defend. They have an elite point guard and arguably the best power forward in basketball. Last year, they didn't have a rim protector, but now, in Lopez, they have a rim protector. They've upgraded their bench with Mo Williams. But having a rim protector has made all the difference for them. Last season, there was no one on their back line.
Scout
In short: Portland's success is driven by its effective inside-outside game, says the scout, who puts the Blazers in the contending class in the West.
"I think the Blazers are very much contenders. I've seen the Clippers and I'm not sure the Clippers are better than them. It could be a toss-up. Portland has what it takes to go deep into the playoffs because of their ability to shoot from the perimeter, and they have a great inside player. They mirror Indiana. They're a good defensive team, they're big, they can score and their defensive numbers are pretty good. They're playing much better on that end than they did last year.
