His mother Rusmina, a housewife, really did agree to let Trnovcevic ship off 14-year-old Jusuf to a boarding school in Slovenia, even though her child hadn’t studied the Slovenian language, hadn’t yet hit his growth spurt, and had rarely spent a night away from home. There was also the little matter of Nurkić’s lack of formal basketball training. “On a scale of 1 to 10, I was a minus-10,” he said. “I didn’t even know how to run.”

In basketball mileage/experience, Jusuf plays like a young high schooler, too fast sometimes and too slow others, and too likely to swipe at balls... and he's THIS good already in the NBA. In five years, when he has the basketball experience of an NBA vet? He'll be amazing.

I feel like we havent really talke dabout this but I think Nurk doesnt get enough credit for our improved D.

Nurkic, a resurgent Davis, and Aminu all have DRtgs below 100, which is really good, and above average for our team defense (100.9), which itself is really good (2nd best in the NBA right now). Jake Layman has somehow managed a DRtg of 98, but that's a really small sample size.

I think his defense last year was a bit better from eye test.

Good defender but I’m not high on Nurk as I use to be. I think he’s a solid nba center but nothing everybody including myself thought he is

I would have no problem passing on him if somebody pays him too much

He blocked more shot last year so this makes sense. But I think from positioning and conditioning standpoint, he's more than making up for that dip in block rate. And he's still contesting plenty of shots well inside.

It's not all because of him, but he's a big reason why we are #1 in opponent fg% at the rim.

Nurk will be better on offense once we find more reliable offensive weapons / allow him to play more often with a spaced floor.

First, it will lower his usg% /post up possesions while also opening up his roll game.

And like Stotts has mentioned, Nurk will be a guy that will shoot 3's in time and if he can shoot 2-3 a game at 33-35%, that will also help him become a more efficent offensive player.

I told you he started train basketball at late age and didnt even know how to run... I wont say its cause of that, but maybe, just maybe thats the reason for some ugly and unorthodox things in his game

I wonder if he started train basketball when he was under 10 yo, how would he look now... but like SportsAndWhine said, in five years, if he trains hard and improves his game, hell be one mean motherfucker and go to LAL to win a championship

while Im here, someone please tell me: how do I mark other forum member so he gets notification and not like I just did

This stood out to me:
“I needed a change of scenery. Both sides needed it,” he said. “I’m thankful Denver let me go where I wanted to go. If I was doing all the bad things that people said, the Nuggets wouldn’t have traded me where I wanted to go, and they probably would have gotten a way better deal than they got.”
He wanted to come here before he got traded. That's pretty cool.

Given how hard it is to get free agents to sign here, passing up on a center who is as good as Nurk is, and who wants to be here would IMHO be a colossal mistake.

That's not exactly what he said... Keep in mind the broken English. He's basically saying, they didn't force him to go to a team he didn't want to go. Whether or not he specifically wanted to go to Portland isn't clear. He might have just had a list of a dozen teams he could felt he would start for.

Equally unclear is the last part of that quote. "If I was doing all the bad things that people said, the Nuggets ... probably would have gotten a way better deal than they got." Huh? That has to be "worse" not "better", right? They'd of been selling low[er] if he was doing bad things.

He's happy, he's young...sky's the limit for this kid..I'm just really glad he's a Blazer

I see some POR fans dont appreciate him enough and I dont like it

to be honest, I dont get it, its not often we have that kind of talent on our hands and some of us are acting just like thats the case... sometimes I wish we let him go, so those people understand what we had and lost

of course, they are minority, large majority of our fans supports Nurk

I love Nurk. But it'd be naive to think he doesn't have a lot of work to do still to become elite, to which I think he will get to.

I more don't like him because of his antics, which then effect his game

@Strenuus youre Nurk hater #1
Id put you on ignore, but sadly I cant

so you are my arch enemy #1 and Im gonna fight you as long Nurk is a Blazer

His play has regressed from what we saw of him last year, but he's till a good center, and has a lot of upside. It's surprising we're seeing him take a step back in a contract year. Imagine if Portland had just signed him to near the max, everyone would be saying he no longer cares because he got paid.

Last year, going into him in the post gave the offense a new dimension, but this year, we're back to the same old habits of Dame and CJ forcing a lot of one on one action (something that's been talked about to death here). Like it or not, he's our only hope of being above mediocre any time soon.

lol I've always been one of his biggest supporters (Hell, I took Nurk in my fantasy league probably 3 rounds too soon because I am so high on him) but that doesn't mean he doesn't have flaws and things that annoy me. It's called being realistic about a player.

Also, a quick news flash: There are people that actually don't like Nurk at all. I'm the least of your concerns. But I appreciate you.

Nurk hater? He just said he thought Nurk will become elite.

I personally, welcome a flopper onto our team. Other teams all flop, and for some reason, the Blazers never seemed to. We need to flop to balance things out.
