Its far too often that we hear about athletes getting away with things because they're 6-9 and lead their team in rebounding. It wasn't too long ago that Syracuse's Eric Devendorf punched a female student in the face and appealed until he got 40 hours of community service as a sanction (downgraded from suspension for the remainder of the academic year as ruled by a University Judicial Board).

While the OP was quite humorous given the circumstances, its great to see a school remembering that the word student comes first in student-athlete for a reason. Of course, I full expect to see BYU ridiculed for their policies and questioned for the impact on the team that removing Davies will have, especially so close to the NCAA tournament. Its also very interesting to see how this story is making big news, while the Sports Illustrated report about the arrest records of ranked college football teams is pretty much being swept under the rug on ESPN and other sites..

I hadn't seen that thread, but if you're signing up to attend or work at a religiously affiliated institution, as long as it is made very clear to you what the honor code is during your recruitment/hiring process, you need to go by it or face the consequences. Davies is from Provo, so I can't imagine any way in which he didn't know about the Honor Code.

I'll be interested to see when its decided whether or not Davies is allowed to continue attending BYU and play for the team next season.

No, I think the code goes for everyone.

I doubt it. I work with a guy who went to BYU and this came up today. As he put it, you just don't mess with the honor code, but the University makes it entirely clear to you what the honor code includes. Also, Fredette is a Mormon so the odds of him breaking the code are probably pretty slim.

And for a bit of context about Davies being removed from the team, its not uncommon for a University to include a sanction that states that someone cannot represent the University in an official capacity. That applies to athletics (varsity and club), but also serving as an officer in campus organizations in cases that I'm familiar with.

I think some do, but I think the ones that are seeking out BYU with their honor code, especially ones who could go to other Universities for free to shoot threes, are there because they're looking for a school that meshes with their religious choices. I would be quite surprised if he didn't live by the code. As my co-worker put it, most students there are there because of the honor code.

Also, found this thread on scout.com. Guess dismissals from teams happen more often than I thought, but we're hearing about this one because BYU is really good at basketball this season. As the BYU grad in the thread put it, students are dismissed for this all the time and most come back the following semester. Apparently Davies can play next season.

We also don't know who he got outed by, it could be a jealous ex-girlfriend. I think you'd be surprised that there are more players on the basketball team that are 'sinning' than some might think.

Between having been 18-22 at one point in my life and having worked in higher ed. professionally (and living in residence) for the last five years, I don't think you could tell me anything that would surprise me about the sexual habits of college students. Mormon or otherwise.

I'm talking about Fredette vs. Davies in this case. There was a thread on St. Bonaventure University forum that I lurk on about Fredette and why SBU didn't recruit him. He didn't consider any college other than BYU because of his Mormon religion. Davies probably picked it because he's from Provo and it gave him a good mix of a chance to play immediately and in the tournament. I think your Mormon athletes, especially ones from outside of Utah who have other options like Fredette, are choosing BYU because of the code.

Well maybe this will give him time to reflect on his religion. I am also not sure how just banning him for the rest of the season would be "living up to the honor code", shouldn't it be a "one and done" type of thing? One really can't undo losing ones virginity.

i remember my friend was describing BYU when he was going there and I was here in SoCal for school. Most of the time they would sit down in their dorms and talk about where they were from. play board games and stupid shit like that. WTF.

I think a big appeal for the school is they meet like-minded individuals that they "settle down" and get married to quickly after college. Its kind of creepy, the whole culture...but its their own schtick I guess. I guess to them, spending shitloads of time getting drunk what not is kind of weird too.

I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly known as the Mormon church) and attended BYU for my undergrad. Agoo has represented the honor code and school pretty well in his comments. While I recognize that Mormons are an easy target for jokes and ridicule because of our beliefs, I've seen several times on this forum that people have made statements that are flat out wrong or completely ignorant. Pre-marital sex is a big thing to the school and to the religion. While some Mormons do have premartial sex, most (the ones active in the faith anyway) do not. To assume we do have premarital simply because most of the world does is narrow minded and a little condescending. Assuming what Mick said about his Mormon friends is true (and I have no reason to believe it's not) those people are just fooling themselves or trying to justify doing things they know to be wrong. Even Mormons (as backwater as you may think we are) are not so ignorant to believe anal sex is not sex.

As to Klinky's comments, I'm not sure if you were being completely serious since your comments have more than a hint of sarcasm, but the suspension for violating the HC has little to do with losing ones virginity. It has to do with violating a school rule. As with any school, they have a punishment for violating a school rule. In this case, the punishment is suspension from the team and possibly the school. Additionally, although I doubt you really care to know the answer and are just attempting to be funny again, I'll tell you how the honor code works. No, there isn't a medical exam to determine if you've had sex. You're required to get an ecclesiastical endorsement (approval from your religious leader) and sign an agreement stating that you have and will live by the standards stated in the honor code. So yes, one could forge it they wanted to, but that action kind of speaks for itself as to the type of person they are. Incidently, I appreciate your distain for the word slut. It's a horrible word to describe any woman.

El Presidente: Yes, sitting down, talking to each other, getting to know each other, and playing games are pretty common at BYU. I'd imagine those are pretty nomral activities wherever you go to school; at least at some point during college. And yes, regardless of my religious views on the matter, I've never seen the appeal of drinking, and especially getting blind drunk.

You all might be interested in knowing that BYU's top RB (Harvey Unga) was suspended from the football team last season for having sex as well. He was a 1000+ yard rusher for them. Just FYI.

For the record, I have no problem with people making statements about disagreeing with my religion or even poking fun at some of "weird" things we do. I do, however, think it's only fair if I get to poke fun at the ignorance and stupidity of some those statements in return. =)

As someone who admires abstinence (before marriage, anyway) I still have a problem with kicking a player off a team for premarital sex. Perhaps a short suspension with counseling... this just strikes me as too radical for a general university.
