Wasn't $5.5-6M/yr the value he had agreed with Sather on but the hold back was the NTC?

So he turned down 6m over 6 and the captaincy for 5.4m over 5?

Sounds like Cally needs a new agent.

I saw maybe around 5.5 per. Remember no state income tax in Florida, so 5.5 per is around 6 per in NY.

Look, Cally wanted his money. No shame in that, but that was # 1 to him. That is why he started at 7 or 8 years and 7 mill or so per, and settled for 6 years in the low 6's per from the Rangers.

He got what he wanted from TB, maybe a little less than the last offer he asked for from us, so it's all good. He knew he had to come down because he was off his rocker at first, and he did.

Worked out better for us because now we get a 2nd from TB next year, that I bet won't be much worse than the 1st we gave them this year, which was pick # 28.

Good for all parties involved.

Seems he didn't really want to be here after all. Oh well, we absolutely do NOT make this kind of playoff run with Callahan instead of St. Louis.

TB is CRAZY for this deal:

The deal, when it’s finalized, will be SIX-YEARS and a cap hit of $5.8 million with a partial no-trade clause. (Pierre LeBrun)

Callahan said in a Tampa Bay press release, “I couldn’t be happier to be part of the Tampa Bay Lightning organization for the next six years and I am excited for this new chapter of my career. Tampa Bay has been a great place to live and play from the day I got there. As soon as the season ended I knew it was a place I wanted to be.”

Callahan and Tampa Bay have officially come to terms on a deal. (Erlendsson)

So he got every cent he wanted pretty much, and 6 years. 5.8 in Florida with no state income tax is 6 or a little over 6 per in NY.

I think TB is nutty to sign him for 6 years with a cap hit of 5.8, but good for us IMO.

I think the 6 years is actually worse than the 5.8 per. I think he should have been low to mid 5's, but 6 years is too long for him IMO.

5.8 for 6 years...after year two tb will totally regret this deal, with no buyouts

As soon as the season ended after Montreal kicked our ass I knew this is where I wanted to be.

Give Cally credit, he got his 6 mill or more per (when you factor in no state income tax), and a partial NTC.

I think that is funny also Mess, I knew TB is where I wanted to be...LOL.

Don't like that deal for TB, but happy Cally got what he wanted. And it worked out great for us also since we get an extra 2nd next year.

Chuck he is a ny resident his worldwide income is taxable to ny. He would have to move out of state for over 183 days. Will he become a resident year round in tampa?

For that kind of money, wouldn't you?

Make TB his permanent address and rent in NY for the summer if he desperately wants to here. The savings are huge.

I would be lead to believe that Callahan is now going to be a Florida resident.

It's no worse a deal for TB than Girardi was for us at that length. :)

On the tax situation on Florida vs New York, “That played into it, it definitely does and with no state income tax you are making more at the same number than you would in another city. During negotiations and during this process we had that to think about but at the end of the day this was the organization that I want to be with and side with and I was really happy that it got done and at a number that both sides are happy with.”

I think Girardi is a better more valuable player as a 2/3 dman, and his cap hit is actually less. This makes the Girardi deal look even better IMO. Girardi could have gotten 6 + as a UFA I think.

They both will make .5m too much but i guess thats what the market dictates. Callahan will give them 20g and be solid for them.

Callahan is a very good player to have on your team. It's not like TB just paid a scrub, but that contract is going to suck in 3yrs.

No doubt Cally is solid. He'll score his 17-20 goals and play his role. Just not sure that is worth nearly 6 mill per, but almost every UFA (or UFA to be) is overpaid.

Being way overpaid for what he brings these days. Very happy someone else is overpaying him and we get a 2nd rd pick out of it.

Define "these days", because he's still playing at a 45-50pt pace which is in line with his career, and his intangibles haven't changed.

These days cally and I guess for those days too cally not a scorer, slow as shit and always hurt. More value wise of a 3.5 to 4 milll player as opposed to just under 6.
